A normal - budget laptop from Dell
20 October 2018
My uncle purchased this laptop from Amazon through his account. He choose the delivery to my address for convenience, so you won't see a 'Verified Purchase' tag for this review. I have unboxed and used it for two days.
Here are a few things that I would like to mention about the laptop that people are doubtful about and the seller experience:
1. Seller experience: I do not wish to name the seller here, but the reason am writing this is inform that online purchases can surprise you even if you choose a top rated seller with Amazon fulfillment.
So here is what the surprise was: The laptop was dispatched in less than 6 hrs after placing the order. The delivery and packaging was good. But once I unwrapped the bubble wrap I saw that the Dell factory seal on the laptop box was completely damaged. It looked as if someone had broken the seal, opened the box and tried to reseal it.
But to our luck the laptop inside had no problems, it was brand new and looked unused, the accessories (only a charger & power cord) were intact. Even the Dell service tag (or serial number) on the laptop and on the box matched. So the only mystery here is who broke the seal and why?
Further I checked the hard disk SMART data and only 6 hrs is recorded up-time of the drive, which means that it is new. And the laptop got registered in the Dell website without any hitch. We did not go for a replacement as the laptop was perfectly fine and there was no necessity for going through all the hurdles. Anyways such practices will only distance a buyer from online platform for anything expensive, hope Amazon improves on this.
2. Laptop details:
i. Most people in other reviews seem to complain about Office license. However in my unit the activation window popped up once I opened Word, it showed that 'Office license comes with this device' and automatically filled a license key in the space provided. Completed the activation by signing in to Microsoft account. The activation window guides one through it and it's very straightforward. You will require an internet connection and a Microsoft account. If you do not complete this activation, Office gives about 10 days trial period. I think this is what most people faced.
I do not remember the exact version, but I think it is "Office 2016 Home and School" with 1 activation/1 device validity.
ii. Windows is also original with a digital license. The version is Windows 10 Home Single Language - lifetime validity.
iii. I believe 4GB RAM is insufficient today. The laptop comes pre-loaded with a number of Dell apps and McAfee Anti virus. They slowdown the system considerably. I suggest you to uninstall all of them - at least McAfee.
I had bought another ADATA 4GB DDR4 RAM to upgrade the laptop to 8GB RAM, there is one free slot. Once I did that and the above mentioned uninstalls everything was smooth.
Upgrading RAM looks like a tough procedure - you need remove a lot of screws, keyboard, CD drive and the back cover - but it can be done in less than 30 mins. Just be careful and you'll need only one screw driver.
You can refer YouTube to see how it is done.
iv. Other things - Display is 1080p, viewing angles not so good, brightness is good. 45W charger, heats up quite fast. CPU fan is silent even when CPU is stressed at 100% - thermals seem to be good. 45C at idle, 61-65C at load.
3 USB ports - 2x USB 3.0 + 1x USB 2.0
I didn't notice anything else that can be added here, it is just like any other budget 30k laptop, nothing special.
If you have any specific questions, comment them down, I'll be happy to answer them if possible.
