The battery meter on my tab is bright red in color right now, and I'm still ignoring the 1% warning on it. Yes, 1% battery left. It was 65%, when I started reading 'Jugnu'. Ruchi Singh, I shall hold you responsible if my tab dies of malnutrition. What I'm trying to say here is that once you start reading it, you shall not be able to put the book down, not even for charging the tab...or yourself. That reminds me, I'm yet to have my dinner.
On a serious note, this book definitely is among the best romances I've read in a long time. The characterization is lively, the locales are real, the flow is smooth, and the build-up is palpitating.
What made it even more interesting for me was the fact that I had been on vacation to Kasauli, just a week before picking up this book. That's a serene hill-station, where the story of 'Jugnu' is set. Everything seemed that much more real to me, as I could visualize the locales clearly.
Read the blurb, and you'd want to read it at the soonest. I recommend this book to all those out there, who believe in love. In fact, I recommend it even more strongly to those who don't.
I give this book a full, five star.

This is the first book I am reading by author Ruchi Singh, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. The title is unique and the blurb hints at a difficult romance. The book is also unusual in that, most romances don’t start off with what looks like an obstacles strewn plot. But the amazing characterization of the undeniably attractive, hazel-eyed Zayd and the demure Ashima drew me right into the heart of the story. The scenic beauty of Kasauli and its serenity subtly shines throughout. As the book progressed I was drawn more and more into it, fretting about the perils, smiling over the brilliant chemistry, anticipating more drama, all the while pining for the two beautiful people to unite. I did wonder why the author chose to portray Zayd as one so young but the strong chemistry they share brushed away any further thought on it. The fact that the lead pair belongs to different religions could have resulted in some tension but the plot is handled very realistically and plays out well. Jugnu is a feel good book with oodles of passion, good language and great flow.

When I first read the excerpt of Jugnu, I was startled to note that the author had jumped right into a set of seemingly unsurmountable challenges: a convict-hero out on parole, a widow who refuses to be widowed, her young child, an unforgiving, racist mother-in-law, and a snatch of evil villains. How on earth is she going to sort everything out, I wondered?
Well, she did it! She picked a scenic locale, Kasauli, to amp up the romantic atmosphere; then added a heavy dose of chemistry that drew the main characters together willy nilly; and finally threw in some nefarious villainy that prompted our hero to become the knight in shining armor - and, happily, everything fell into place.
A fast read; plausible plot; great characterization!

I barely registered the rain or the fact that my dog had come and settled on the bed besides me as I read the book. I was lost in Kasauli. Ruchi Singh has a wonderful way of describing places that is more poetic than prose. I could see the mountains and the sun shining through the trees. I could smell the fresh air. As I said I was lost in the book from the first page itself.
The characters are portrayed brilliantly. I half expected them to come right out of the pages and talk to me. Not just Zayd and Ashima but all the supporting characters as well. Each one of them exhibits a plethora of emotions that you can relate to and empathize with.
Ashima is a single mom… no, she is a single daughter in law, a single bhabhi as well, and the sole bread earner. Her weariness, her loneliness, the conventions that bind and hold her back, Her helpless acceptance of her responsibilities , her anguish of not knowing the fate of her husband who is missing in action in the Kargil war, the endless waiting, the flickering of hope against hope, are what make Jugnu a book that is a class apart.
Zayd, having faced death in all its gruesomeness at an early age, is mature beyond his years. He fights with his demons and forges his own identity. Out on parole all he wants is peace but finds someone who steals his heart instead.
Ruchi has brought out the discrimination faced by Muslims in India in the book, but she deals with it in a very matter of fact manner. She doesn’t make a hue and cry about it. I liked the fact that she doesn’t get preachy yet brings home her point.
I think this one definitely deserves 5 stars.

One of the best novels in the romantic genre I have read in a long time! This is the first book I have read of the author and I am mighty impressed. There is so much soul and depth in the love story that it will make you fall in love with love. The characters of Aashima and Zayd are so well etched that you start rooting for them from the time they are introduced. Throughout the story my heart was pining for them to unite at the end. The language is beautiful and rich, and I almost felt like I was watching a movie. Highly recommended read!

This is the first book I read by this author and it took me by surprise. This is not the regular boy meets girl romance. There is more depth to each character, even the supporting characters. The widow Ashima and the supposed bad boy on parole Zayd are not the people you expect to fall in love every day. But they do and the author makes their tender feelings believable. The descriptions of Kasauli not only made me visualize the place but also made me yearn for the place. The author leaves with an ache as you read through the journey of Ashima and Zayd.
Would recommend the book for readers who love meaningful romances.

Jugnu by Ruchi Singh is more than a romance. This tightly woven intense story demands undivided attention until the very end. Zayed doesn't tell Ashima he's served time in prison. She's married and has a child. How can she resist the attraction that simmers between them, how can she be disloyal to her husband?

Jugnu is a pleasant and meaningful love story. I loved the character of Zayd - flawed yet sensitive & intense. The very special connection between Ashima and Zayd is beautiful and convincing. Smart writing. Engaging & entertaining.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Wonderful writing, beautifully etched characters and a hero who stole my heart....Zayd to me was the strength and core of Jugnu...Now if only Ashima would get out of the way, he could be all mine! :)

Congratulations Ruchi Singh on coming up with a fabulous romance set in the lovely hill station of Kasauli. It was bold and beautiful, superbly penned. Kudos!
