Drive failure, data loss and RMA. The failure of WD quality checks.
5 March 2019
I bought my last WD Elements more than a year ago. It was an orange coloured 4TB drive. I took it out of its sealed pack just this week in order to transfer my data backups. After copying around 200GB of data, the drive suddenly became unresponsive and froze my computer. Now it has become unreadable, no pc can read it, not even WD's own diagnostic software. It was never manhandled, dropped or exposed to any extreme conditions. It just died.
Now I have submitted an RMA request and will be sending this drive for replacement (at my own cost). I will get a refurbished drive with 90 day warranty in exchange for my new 4TB (which cost me over 9,000 rupees btw). Of course, I have lost all my data and now have to deal with the RMA process. This is the state of WD in India. You pay for a new drive, it dies and you lose your data, your time and your money, ultimately left with a refurbished drive and the feeling of being cheated.
I don't even know why I'm getting this drive replaced because the next one could fail just as easily and destroy more of my data. This will be the last time that I buy anything from WD. If you plan to buy this then I hope you have better luck than I did.
