After 'Gone girl', I decided to read all the Gillian Flynn I could get my paws on. Fast forward a year or two, I had an Amazon gift card of 110 rupees and I was looking for a cheap book to buy in that. I spotted this black beauty at sale for exact 110! I ordered it immediately and was happy for such a great deal. But then I received the copy and it was only 64 pages!
'The Grownup' is a thriller-horror short story by the Gillian Flynn which originally appeared as “What Do You Do?” in George R. R. Martin’s Rogues anthology. It can be divided into 3 parts.
Part one is the introduction. It introduces the main character and her trade and how she grew up, conning people. It was pretty interesting. Part two, contains the horror and all the supernatural elements and very well succeeded in giving me chills. Part three is the revelation, where we, the readers are faced with confusion and 'who/what do we believe in' scenario. Flynn, instead of giving us a simple conclusion leaves the reader baffled and shocked and bewildered. I enjoyed it fine. It didn't amaze me.
However, I liked the voice of the main character. I could hear her as she described how she conned her Tonys (inside joke). Also the writing is gripping and engaging. Flynn is an expert in designing manipulative and shrewd characters which are likable.
Final verdict- Buy an ebook than a physical copy. For mere 67 pages, its not worth the money. While the story is not too great, the writing and the main characters are interesting.
