A soulful social treatise, historical memoir and unfinished love
21 August 2018
The book touches the soul at many levels and unlike other books documenting Kolkata does not take sides. It goes on to provides a rich description of the city, its people and the mundane events that dominate its existence in the larger backdrop of its history dating back to pre-Independence era,Partition and more recent Nandigram massacre. This is layered by Choudhury's own personal life, in effect touching the soul with ebbs of comfort and anguish , much like unfinished love. The love which one strives , but seemingly too disturbing to acquire.
I was born in Kolkata, but grew up far in rural Bengal with my memories being limited to summer vacations with cousins and a couple of years in between , now 'visiting' it every few months . The book changed the way I look at Kolkata , and provides a lens to understand our previous generation . Highly recommended for anyone who seeks to understand the soul of the city better !
