This book is amazingly accurate for readers who want to know what actually happened in the life of the first freedom fighter of India. The courage of tipu was unmatched and this book though concise puts you in his shoes. I love the fact that tipu is not demonised like other books because he had good relations with every religion. The author has retained my confidence in reading history again.

Was Tipu Sultan a cruel bigot or a wise and just ruler? A reckless adventurer or a proud nationalist? This book cuts through the myths to bring this controversial king and his times come vividly alive, from his youthful military exploits to his death in his final battle against the British.

In Tiger, we meet the unknown side of the royal, imperial and remarkable character of Tipu Sultan, one of the few South Indian kings to provide stiff resistance to British imperialism, along with Hyder Ali. He is applauded as a ruler who fought against British colonialism. Similarly, he has been a controversial figure and criticized for his atrocities against Hindus, Christians, and Mappla Muslims.

An enchanting nineteenth-century epic of grand passion and adventure, this debut novel tells the captivating story of one of India’s most legendary and controversial emperors– a man whose brilliance and determination trumped myriad obstacles, and whose decisions and wars shaped the course of the Mysore empire.

This historical novel tells the story of Tipu Sultan the man, the lover, the soldier, the prince, and the king. It speaks of those who loved and betrayed him; of charming ladies and brilliant men around him; of his greatness and of the crafty stupidity of his contemporaries; os the wit and folly of his times; and of the struggle of men and ideas when faced with the march of history. Based on extensive research and original sources, Tiger is an original contribution to historical literature which gives insights into the character of its hero, and the period in which he lived.

Tipu, maligned by historians as a cruel and bigoted ruler, emerges here as a humane, enlightened ruler who believes that God is not confined to any one religion and that all religions, therefore, require equal respect. He was opposed to colonialism; welcomed the American Declaration of Independence and applauded the spirit of the French Revolution. The author establishes him as the first among modern Indian nationalists who knew also that India was weakened not by outside powers but by sickness, decadence and disunity within.

The novel vividly portrays the drama of Tipu’s times and recaptures the amazing spirit of the man who in the midst of disaster lost neither his dignity nor his love for his faith in the values he cherished. He chose to court death when he could have saved himself, for he firmly believed that his sacrifice would serve as an example for the future generations of India.

the best part of the book is its beauty in the simplicity of language and the complex and gripping narrative. I felt that the beauty of the enchanting narration makes the book truly a “masterpiece”. one cannot put down the book in the middle if you have started once. for the narration, it is just mind-boggling. the way she captures each character and emotions in their pen would leave you enthralled. the book is very meticulously researched and this intense work is very well channelled through their extraordinary narration and captivating plot.

The history of Tipu Sultan stands as a glaring instance of this distorted historical narrative. Indeed, we have seen, read, and heard about a lot of people claiming to be freedom fighters and receiving pensions from the Government. Several of these worthies would not have been born before Independence yet they succeed in such blatant manipulations. There are instances of portraying certain rulers and chieftains as true heroes who fought against the British Empire. One such ruler happens to be Tipu Sultan.

Tipu Sultan is widely known as the Tiger of Mysore. Indeed, the image of Tipu battling a tiger barehanded crosses the mind whenever his name is mentioned. But is this the truth? Was Tipu Sultan truly the warrior as he has been portrayed? What exactly is his record of fighting the British? Was he really a freedom fighter as is widely claimed?

Kate Brittlebank in this well-researched book explores both the myths and the truth surrounding Tipu Sultan. A must-read for those who wish to learn the true story of Tipu Sultan.

the book totally is worth reading. and if you have not read it, it is totally your huge loss. overall the book is in simple words a “masterpiece”.a perfect tapestry of history and research. the book is such a perfect piece of the whole bloody and imperial Tipu history that I would declare it truly as a “legend in the field of history.”
imaginative. intrigue. intense.
I would recommend the book to all the history lovers and to everyone who loves intensive research and I am sure they would love the gripping story.

The author gives a good overview of Tipu Sultan and his struggle with the British and the regional powers. She does so in a dispassionate manner so that, at no time, you get the feeling of bias. What is important in evaluating a historical figure is to analyze his actions in the context in which the events occurred so that you develop a better understanding of why such actions were performed by him. This, the author has done well.
