and is best read using Don Gifford's "Annotations to James Joyce's Ulysses" ...

This edition of Ulysses, though no longer considered the "definitive edition", is a synoptic version of the continuous manuscript text prepared with enormous care over several years by Prof. Hans Walter Gabler. It contains no explanatory notes, and is best read using Don Gifford's "Annotations to James Joyce's Ulysses" as a companion.
I would advise the beginner to purchase the Oxford Ulysses (1922 text) prepared by Jeri Johnson first. It contains reading guides, the schema and enough footnotes to enable you to read it without external help.
