My review will be on 2 topics: 1) The content of the book 2) The book itself
Warning: If you are an aspirant candidate to write competitive government based exams, this is a book that could probably guide you in story framing, but not help in bulletin points.
To a reader of history, for pleasure: Mr. Chandra has done a tremendous service by extrapolating the data from noise and compiling them into a great feast for knowledge hungry historians like myself. From the 16th century till the attainment of Independence, this book gives you a brilliant overview of the occurrences (in chronological order) and stays away from passing any personal view. Thus, critical thinking is strictly advised if an opinionated dimension is what you seek to achieve.
A top class book overall.
While I cannot stress enough to say how brilliantly the book is written, however it is with dismay that I confess that the seller has mugged me with practically a duplicate copy of the original version. Which is the main reason behind the poor rating, as I'm judging the product itself (not just the content).
I can confidently assess this is the sellers fault based on 2 data points: 1) Empirical evidence of reading plenty of history books 2) Reading books previously and later published by Orient Blackswan
Amazon - Please refrain from selling books from such sellers who practically mugs the customers in broad daylight!
For the uninitiated... It is an old NCERT book which is now commercialized. It is very good and actually important from UPSC point of view. Though many suggest Spectrum, which I won't argue as that is also an excellent book. This is more descriptive and doesn't contain as much details as the Spectrum's does as That is full of facts. This gives the account of events in more of a novel form.
I received my order before estimated delivery date. But the following pages are not printed, they are blank, in this book; Pages-218,219,226,227,230,231,238,239242,243,246,277 I am unhappy because I had ordered 3 book together to save delivery charges. Now I have to order again and pay delivery charges as the book was incomplete, for no fault of mine :(
History of Modern India, by Bipin Chandra, one of the most popular and renowned author, focuses more on the economic, religious, and social history of India than the political factors.
The chapters in this book are arranged in chronological order, from decline of the era of Mughals that means basically from the era of Aurangzeb and has concluded on 15th August 1947, the day we got our independence.
It provides insight on several events in modern Indian history such as the establishment of the British East India Company, which led to a tightened grip of the British over India. This book gives a brief account of events that led to the formation of India as we know today.
This book provides readers with loads of information on the nationalist movement, throwing light on the contributions made by several different individuals. This book is a must-have for history students as well as for those who want to gain insight into the history of modern India. And also for individuals preparing for civil services.
However, this book is very old and it needs to be updated.
The quality of the pages and print quality is very good.
This is one of the most referred book , so I will not make any comment on the topics given in it , but yaa it's good. But the quality of the paper when I bought it was not that good nor bad too either . But it could have been better . There will be no problem in reading . Be sure for that . Just page quality is of low GSM
