The book some what disappoints me. It is written by a well known scholar of history. But, it reads like a typical text book. I was expecting to read a more insightful book. This book treats the politics, economy, commerce, society, culture, religion separately, ignoring their inter-relationship. This was how history books of the yore were written. Second factor is that the author tries to whitewash the oppression and atrocities committed by the Muslim rulers commencing with Delhi Sultanate till the end of Mughal rule. Even in respect of the acts of a blatant fanatic like Aurangzeb, the author tries to state reasons other than his oppressive religious policy, such as political rivalry, law/order issues and the like. All these alternative explanations appear like mere statements or ipsi dixit, not supported by sources. Thus, a lay reader like me cannot conclude whether these statements of the author are duly supported by historical sources, or is merely an attempt at whitewashing the Muslim atrocities of the medieval period. This would be a suitable book for someone who writes exams, not for someone genuinely interested in the study of history.
if your english is very good then this book is very helpful to you. this book comes from a eminent writer satish chandra who has a lots of knowledge in this field. rather than reading ncert if you can read this book then there is one surety you can precisely get the idea of medieval india . also watch the online content with reading of this book
Helped me know the Turkish invasion and formation of Mughal Empire as well as the some of the cultural aspects of India which were shaped the way it is now with time. This book helps understand why India is what it is now and what are the long term results of certain policies based on the overall population structure of India.
The content of the book is great... Nothing to say there...
But, the printing and the binding of the book is very bad - The printing is not aligned with the pages, slant at various places - The binding is very poor, the pages came off after a few days - even when used with utmost care.
Photocopied version, do not buy. I have bought three orient blackswan publication books -all three were photocopied versions. I was not able to identify it as fake at the time of purchase because the binding is perfect. My friend showed his original product, there is stark difference in the quality of pages and print. More importantly customer support doesn't care. DO NOT BUY!
