In Which Things Get So Boring I Had To Put It Down
8 June 2018
Unpopular opinion alert. I'm in the minority in this instance. Halfway through I had to put it down. I'm not sure if I missed something. I wanted to love it. It had all the things I love about middle grade fantasy fiction. Witches, magic, swamp monsters, cute baby dragons, spells, enchanted forests etc. Sounds exciting, doesn't it? All good stuff in theory. The actual reading experience however, made me weary. The story is not engaging at all and the characters had no personality. The writing was dull and so repetitive that I had to skim in parts. I mean, yes, Luna's magic manifesting itself in odd ways was interesting at first but do we really have to read about it over and over again? In addition, characters have lost their memories so we have constant feelings of deja vu from them. There are multiple plot threads but we have no idea what's going on. The magic system is rather vague and random. The pace is excruciatingly slow and there's an underlying sense of sorrow. I'm not sure how this would appeal to young readers. I'm an adult and it certainly tested my patience. Maybe it ends on a spectacularly high note but I decided it is not worth my time.
