This book is about microbes and how they have played (and continue to play) a important role in shapping the course of the history of life in our planet. Micorobes has always been seen in the light of germ theory: they are pathological. This book address the positive aspects of our microbiome: how we co-evolved with them, how they help build vital body functions, and how sickness in people can result because of distuptions in them. It also talks about how we humans are disrupting these partnerships (by our antibacterial tendencies) and how we might manipulate them for our own good as we learn more about them. The book offers hope that there can be a future where our maladies will be treatable by a ‘la carte of microbes’ in the form of probiotics.
The book presents highly technical and complex subjects in a very simplistic manner. The flow of writing feels like a suspense novel and overall its a real page-turner. Recommended for those who want to know about the influence of bacteria on our lives and more importantly their evolution
Ed Yong's narrative is quite illuminating; I am not a biology guy, but then I could really make out for those tiny creatures which makes up us as US and also the part played by them from since eons ! With so much break through happenings, it will not be a surprise, that Yong has to get prepared to serve us with the "Second Edition"
