I bought this book to get a quick brush-up before resuming academics after a 4 year gap. The quality of the book is excellent with crisp pages bound in a hardcover, though the size and weight is a bit of an issue while traveling around.
Coming to the contents: -DIAGRAMS: Have been illustrated in an excellent manner with vivid colors. The subtle variation of color in diagrams helps while differentiating the brain based on functionality and cortical areas. -TABLES: Tables provided are easy to understand as well. Some tables present a good comparison of the human brain with that of other animals (Eg: Sensory chapters: hearing and smell). Other tables throughout the book serving to provide information in a concise manner helps a lot in comprehending and memorizing. -SCANS: The book includes images (Actual scans of the human brain from different positions) that help understand the location of different areas in the brain. -DISORDERS: There are small sections in different chapters that give short explanations on common brain disorders or conditions. These sections are succinct but well explained. GLOSSARY & INDEX: A well defined glossary and an index have been provided towards the end of the book.
Altogether, an excellent book that can be easily understood even by people who are curious to study the basics of the human brain. For professional graduates in this area, this would appeal more in terms of diagrams than content and detail. I often need to carry a few books at a time, so would have loved if it was available in the kindle format.
Phenomenal piece of work. I have never seen a better encyclopedia in my life, let alone on a subject as complicated as the workings of the human brain. Hats off to Rita Carter and DK. Must buy for anyone interested in the subject.
Really great book - for all ages! Kids will love looking at the pictures of the brain...Older students will love the colorful descriptions. And for adults its fascinating to know all the facts about brain
