The thing that I liked most about this book is that while you read poems written by women across the world, especially the first hand experiences of abuse they went through, you can almost imagine their state of mind. Though all of us know that women need to be treated right and equal, I don't think we really get the criticality of it. Some poems in this book made me feel that being a man, how easy I've got a lot of things in life that I take for granted. A lot of these poems are intense but others are just untold thoughts from wonderful women. A must read because it makes you see things from perspective of so many, much-stronger-than-men women and makes you think how long a way we are yet to go as a society.
This is a bridge to a brave new land, where readers may come together in support, in solidarity and warmth. The thoughts and verse in this anthology of eminent poets across the world, add a resplendent glow to the word 'poetry' by upholding the truth. Each poem is accompanied by a short narration describing the circumstances that led to it. In speaking up and exposing the ominous realities shrouding a woman's existence - their own or other's - these poets have embarked on a journey of healing, inspiration and belonging.
It is very exciting, indeed heartening, to hold a book containing the voices of women from all over the world sharing their own experiences and breaking free of barriers, to forge new bonds. Somewhere, within it, the personal becomes the universal, and the dilution of hurt that this leads to, is a gift in itself.
There are poems of pain, poems of resistance and poems of healing. In that magical alchemy of poetry, the process of writing itself overwrites sorrow with courage; and the act of reading instills greater sensitivity and understanding of difficult issues.
Even as i was writing this review and thought it complete, another grotesque, macabre incident in our country violated and robbed a woman of her life, bringing our casteist, chauvinistic, archaic mindset to the fore. It only underlines in bold italics the importance and beauty of this book.
Last evening we attended a talk by the right-path-finder spiritually evolved Mahatria Ra, who said that the dark destructive forces are all playing in teams, it's time the good positive forces joined hands and came together to wash them out!
A must read for anyone who feels strongly about women issues. This book was first conceptualised after the Jyothi Singh Pandey murder and rape in India in 2012. The book tells stories from around the world of survivors and witnesses in an unprecedented manner. The writing is moving and beautiful. This book will definitely change your perception of the world we live in and stay with you for a long time.
The book is a beautiful collection of poems of pain, anger and empowerment. Each poem reminds me of story of my own, each poem reminds me of how similar the condition is of women, children across ages, geographies and cultures. The book is powerful, moving and marks the beginning of the societal revolution.
It's a very important anthology for gender sensitisation. It's very heartwarming to see that poets from all over the world have come together in solidarity after the ghastly incident happened in Delhi in Dec 2012. The poems are very powerful. I'm very happy I picked it up.
