I am no fan of Rajesh Khanna. I picked up this book after reading Yasser Usman's Rekha which I hugely enjoyed. This is Yasser's first book (published in 2014). While writing the book he faced similar challenges as in Rekha of not getting access to the subject or his family and close acquaintances. In this case Rajesh Khanna's death was the starting point for the author's decision to pen his biography when he attended his funeral procession and was told to put a story for his channel by his boss. Still many opened up to him including filmmakers, scriptwriters like Salim Khan (who has also written a foreword to the Book), film journalists of that era...a lot of archival material from film magazines, fan clubs, blogs, newspapers covering Rajesh Khanna's interviews, those of Dimple, Anju, Tina and others... articles about Bollywood in the 70s and 80s and success of his cult movies and their music like Aradhana, Anand, Kati Patang, etc And it shows...The book is a culmination of the detailed research and is a brilliant effort. For those of us born later and who never witnessed 'The Phenomenon' of Rajesh Khanna's superstardom in the seventies, his massive fan following, the book is an eye opener and will blow you away. And just as he rose and touched the dizzying heights of success worshipped by millions of fans across the country as God and King of Bollywood his fall was equally dramatic and tragic. How and why it happened, his personality traits, his unique childhood, his decisions which paved his destiny, his working style, the women he loved and who loved him but still he lost them, all this and much more is covered with such detail, flair and panache that you will not feel anything has been missed out or is incomplete in any way. Brilliant read and highly recommended Especially if you are Not a fan of Rajesh Khanna !
A very well researched book on superstar Rajesh Khanna which deals with all aspects of the actor's life and traces the childhood, meteoric rise and the sudden downfall of the actor. The author provides insightful information about the events which took place in the actor's life and also delves into the actor's psyche to offer explanations about his behaviour at different stages of stardom. Like Salim Khan mentions in the foreword, the book reads much like the script of one of Rajesh Khanna's films and makes us cry and smile at places. The book will definitely bring the reader very close to the actor and help us in understanding his amazing and unique journey in the film industry. Thankyou amazon for the prompt delivery
You will know a new Rajesh Khanna after you're through with this book. You will know about the vulnerabilities, the insecurities, the flaws of India's first superstar...and then, you might as well, sympathise with the man who has seen the prime of everything in his life: from success to failure, from acceptance to rejection, and then finding everything back at one go.
excellent work is done, interesting to read and fantastic on other individuals. It does not shy away from interesting true exposures of persons no matter how great these colleagues of Rajesh Khanna be.
This biography on Rajesh Khanna, India's First Superstar' is a wonderfully woven humane tale. It beautifully talks about the emotions that Rajesh Khanna went through when the stardom went away. Yasser Usman succeeds quite well in portraying the loneliness and establish the connect with the character. By the end of the book you'll start feeling for the man. Ace.
I have seen his charisma and popularity he gained is unique...liked to read about his golden days but saddened to read about after years of his golden era...he was and will always be remembered as truely super star of Bollywood...no one has achieved what he has achieved....hats off to him....
