In praise of Lord Shiva
12 November 2015
I had read a lot about Vishnu devotees, but very few of Shiva devotees. This book was an eye opener for me.
I could not fathom the depth of free verse lyrics (vacanas) by the Shiva devotees. Author has given a very fair justice in picking up the vacanas of four great Shiva devotees Basavanna, Devara Dasimayya, Mahadeviyakka and Allama Prabhu.
The depths of the poem are immense and meaningful. Translation by A K Ramanujan is best. Also, a brief introduction by William McCormack about Lingayats is very crisp and meaningful. It is difficult to grasp that this work was done by Mr. Ramanujan and published in 1973.
The poems especially of Mahadeviyakka was very strong in communicating how she saw freedom from the bondage's of relationships and body.
If one poem is selected and mentioned as favorite of mine and reproduced here, then i truly display the lack of appreciation for this gems from all four devotees.
The best part of the poems is the imagination used by devotees in communicating their feelings to Lord Shiva. Some are exceptionally good and worth treasuring with one for a life time.
This book is a must read for every one who wants to understand life in a poetic way.
