There are more brands offering what I was looking for, but I became especially curious about the iLLumiShield because of the amazing number of good reviews. Could that be real for such a modest price?
Delivery was quick, but I was hanging back from the operation of putting the shield on. The next day I'd make my first attempt, as I called it.
However, first time was surprisingly easy going, as if the shield layed itself. The material is sturdy yet flexible. Just a few air bubbles on one of the sides remained, but could simply be flattened out. After that the phone and the protector felt like a melded unit. A sigh of relief. And it being a dry process was nice after all.
But then I noticed I myself had been sloppy. The bottom edge of the shield was slightly overlapping the microphone. The shield was placed just a little too low.
It is better to carefully probe first with the covering plastic still in place.
Maybe speach would hardly be hindered, but I prefer perfectness if feasible, so the shield was to be moved up a little.
No problem, I thought, having the first experience in mind. And indeed, despite the impression of a melded unit, a corner could be lifted and the shield be gently removed. But then I noticed some tacky residues on the phone's glass. Would those residues remain visible after a second laying if I didn't remove them? Would the shield adhere with the same strength again if I did remove them?
I decided to clean the glass. The same cloth that came in the package served this purpose also, and did so fine, without any fluids used.
However, the result of the second laying was not good. The sides were not fixed firmly to the phone glass this time, and there were more bubbles. Also, the bubbles could not be made disappear entirely. I don't know why this was, but my conclusion was: one shield one chance. I don't consider this to be a flaw of the iLLumiShield, because while holding the shield fixed at the top during its first laying, it is all right to lift up partly, then lower again to show air bubbles the way out. Fixation to the glass turned out to still be perfect then.
So I took number 2 of the 3 shields that came in the package (thank you!), aligned it correctly this time, and let it more or less find its position by itself again. And again, only a few presses directed outward were needed for a perfect lock on all sides.
Now I'm happy. This iLLumiShield is excellent indeed. The high-rating reviews don't fool you.
There is no visible loss of clarity, and so far no scratches and no loosening at all. Also there is no loss in any way of the sensitivity to finger touches. However, the layer in between does cause a loss of sensitivity to the stylus pen. This is the only drawback I found, though it does not matter to me personally,
When reading back the low-rating reviews, while especially searching for applications on a Nokia Lumia 1520 (my phone), I find remarks on size (too small), bubbles, bad fixation at the edges and scratches. Personally I cannot confirm those remarks. But my phone sits in a book case, which may make a difference.
And then there's one person mentioning the malfunctioning of the proximity sensor after the shield was installed. This also is, of course, a much appreciated remark. However, again I cannot confirm. I hadn't noticed any malfunctioning except for the stylus, but after reading the comment I double checked.
This sensor is actually a combined proximity and ambient light sensor. In my case everything functions properly, i.e. the screen turns black when close to the head (proximity sensor) and adjusts brightness in a dark/light environment (light sensor). Or is it that I am simply lucky to have a clean sensor under the shield, because it had not yet gathered much dust before the shield came on top of it? I don't know, I'm just happy, even more so when thinking of dust landing on the shield from now on, not on the sensor...
