This movie was voted by the American Film Institute as the Best Comedy of All Time and its frequently considered in the greatest films list. All I can say is that it deserves to be there. Its a very funny movie. It was quite bold for its time and it features Marlyn Monroe in the best performance of her career. She even won a Golden Globe for it. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis are also brilliant. They spend most of the movie in drag. The plot is about two men who after accidentally witnessing a murder take up a job in a women's band, dressing up as women to hide from gangsters. And this outrageous plot seems a perfect match for a comedy. So many pictures have copied scenes, plot, dialogues from this movie, but none could re-create that magic. Maybe its Billy Wilder's direction which turns it into the classic that it is. This movie is truly a must-watch.
The picture quality and sound quality is good. Its not as good looking as the Apartment blu-ray, but that is due to the way it has been shot. But its clearly an upgrade over the dvd. And in terms of extras, all the extras from the international blu-ray releases are there. They include an Audio Commentary, a making of feature, a feature examining the legacy of the film, an interview with Tony Curtis, an interview with junior artists on the film, a stills gallery and a trailer. The extras are good, but the movie itself makes this disc worth buying.
All together a so so movie. It was fun to watch Lemon, Curtis and Monroe but with passage of time, we have seen better performances by boys in girlie costumes. Good for home view but not worth the trouble for a theatre visit.
