"Speak softly, sir. The regime has ears on all sides. There's an old saying that the regime is deaf. It's deaf only when we speak about our problems. When we talk about the regime, it's ears are quite sharp."
Poonachi is my first ever novel by Perumal Murugan.
Poonachi is my first ever translated novel.
Poonachi is also my first ever regional novel.
Poonachi is the story of a weak, orphan and miracle baby goat who looks like a black kitten, hence the name, Poonachi. It’s a story based on a unique and imaginary theme with anthromorphisation which starts with struggles of Poonachi to stay alive. A stranger gives Poonachi to an old man and his wife, old woman starts taking care of her. Poonachi doesn’t know her biological mother; other nanny goats are not ready to feed her; old couple is too poor to buy milk or anything else to feed her; she barely escapes from a mysterious animal attack. The old woman struggles to keep her alive and in the middle of all these hardships, develops a special bond with Poonachi; like a mother- daughter relationship. As the story progresses, Poonachi fights against all odds and lives a life where she goes through a lot of ups and downs, experiences love and loss; sees loved one killed and sacrificed. At one point she becomes the Miracle goat and the same miracle takes her life!
Though it might look like a simple story of a goat, it’s much more than that. First of all, yes it is centered on animals and that’s why you will notice only animals have names and humans are just called, old man, old woman, their daughter and so on. So basically no human names. Characterization is very detailed and strong, they surely will stay with you for a long time.
Through this unique and offbeat fiction, Murugan has raised some serious social and political issues in a not so subtle manner. You will see themes like gender and racial discrimination, oppression, injustice of government, social hierarchy and satire on all of these! The narration is quite simple, may be because of translation.
Overall, it’s a thought provoking masterpiece which is definitely recommended for those who are not afraid to explore the real and dismal side of the world. It will keep you engaged till the end. Promise!
This book narrates the life of a miraculous black goat, who was gifted to an old couple by a mysterious man. He claimed that the goat kid belonged to a breed which delivers seven kids at a time and she happened to be the seventh one. She was weak, fragile and vulnerable. The old woman tried to feed her milk from the nanny goats but failed miserably. As a consequence, Poonachi grew weaker and weaker day by day. She was discriminated for her colour, size and shape by her fellow mates. As she grew up, she learnt the ways of life. She learnt about acceptance, dejection, heart break, happiness, anger and love. Quite strange, isn’t it? An ordinary goat feeling the same kind of emotions that a human does? Although, it is the story of a goat, it metaphorically resembles the life of a woman. Through adolescence to womanhood, this story narrates every detail of the extraordinary life of an ordinary animal. This masterpiece by Murugal needs to be read. The narration was brilliant. The village scenario, the old thatched house of the old couple, the fields, the forests, everything was so beautifully depicted. The mention of the colour ‘black’ holds a deep meaning. It represents discrimination. Ironically, none of the human characters were given a name but every goat had a name. Although, it was a small book, I could not complete it in one sitting. And it is not a book to be completed in one sitting. You will feel all kinds of emotions while reading this book. And surprised, as to how a book written on the life of a goat can make such a remarkable impression on you. The book left me all teary eyed. I read the translated version but, if you can read in Tamil, go for the original one. Just buy the book and give it a read.
This is the kind of book that I would recommend everyone. The author touches various issues faced by the populace in general and uses a goat as a central character to drive across various points that a girl have faced living in India. It's not a book that's preachy but a book that makes you sit up and take notice of small things we are used to as life, but ones that are actually issues that need to be spoken and discussed. Also, each one will interpret the book in his own way basis his/her experiences.
Poonachi or the story of a black goat is the story of a black goat named Poonachi and her journey from being called as a miracle to a curse. This book is about joys, sorrows, sacrifice, forced customs, love, hate, struggle, dreams, expectations and helplessness and how Poonachi goes through all these emotions. The beauty of the book lies in the fact that not the human characters but animals are named. It is one of the most finest beauties published in 2018 (original tamil one was published in 2016)and indeed marks its presence in my favourites and I am glad that I got a hardcover (a signed hardcover 😎). There is something magical about Perumal Murugan' s narration that goes effortlessly but hits the heart and this one hits harder. The translation done by N. Kalyan Raman is so on point that he didn't let translation strip off the beauty and soul of Murugan's magic. Read it if you haven't already you won't be disappointed.
Omg..! What a book.!❤ After a very long time i have read a book which i can actually call a page turner.❤ . The book is about the journey of Poonanchi from birth to her last moments. . Poonachi, goes through all the ups and downs in her life, just like a human being. Her conversations with her loved ones, her anger for the one's she doesnt like, every emotion she has, is shown. . This was the first translated book that I read and I am in love with it. .
It's been a long time I've read such an emotional novel. Hats off to the author. Poonachi, the goat, had lived a tragic life. She never knew her mother. She was refused by another goat whom she liked as her mother. She had dreamed of spending her life with her love but that didn't happen either. Her speciality of delivering 7 kids in a litter was once a boon and once a curse. She saw her loved ones killed and sold. She saw pain, she felt the pain. Her life surely teaches us a lesson that life is always uncertain. We don't always get what we wish for. But Poonachi has taught us to enjoy the little moments that we have and to relish them. She saw many things that she never dreamt to see but never retorted. She went by the fact of her life and helped the old couple in their tough times even when her survival was quite difficult. The author has greatly reflected the feelings of a goat and reminded everyone to be gentle with others, be it a human or an animal. Translation was excellently done. I wish I knew Tamil so that I could read the original book too. Kudos to the author and the translator as well.
Murugan's pastoral romances all laced with the premonition of tragedy have captivated us. Poonachi is no different. It is couched in simplicity and innocence of pastoral people but everywhere there lurks darkness which we know will envelope the narrative soon. In this novel of a goat which enters the life of a poor couple and then takes over their life, there are various metaphors of life. His characters always live on the edge, straitjacketed between darkness and light. To humanise animal life is a rare gift and Murugan's has again proved that the lifeblood of a great story teller flows through his veins. A novel of immense clarity and power.
Poonachi , the story of that black goat who was gifted by Bakasuran to an old man to bring up ,whether he denied this gift with his thousand unwillingness to give this young black goat a shed and care but circumstances repeatedly imposed him to make that young she goat a part of his small family. From her journey thousand problems knocked her door and made her conditions more pathetic. Though she got the love of old woman but somewhere people can't understand the agony of the animals , when an animal lost her love , lost her children , when a animal became an eyewitness of the misfortunes of her friends that also hurt her that also take the sleep from her eye that can't be understood by human . People always think about their happiness and they can be brutal for that. They can slaughter animal , they can bury them because they can't give enough feed to their hearts. And they want more. Poonachi can be a goat here but through her story somewhere the story of all girls , who are tortured to accept all the norms of the society has been shown in every chapter of this book. Every part of the story touches the heart of the reader and brings tear in the eyes. Such an amazing book it was !
This is a very strong work of literature and life. The book is very well written with the most prominent life lessons of a human being, starting from birth to the death, involving young age, adulthood, parenting, friendship, love, betrayal and what not. The book is about a black goat, Poonachi. She is born out of an ordinary goat but isn't ordinary. She is left with an ordinary old couple but isn't ordinary. She is skinny yet has an attractive black mane. She is everything that she shouldn't be.
This Poonachi will survive anything.
The story revolves around rural India and various activities that take place there, involving the government. The initial story looks seems like an ordinary fable for children. But as you move ahead, you go through the deep meaning the author has been trying to deliver. The happenings with Poonachi will be found very relating to you and me. The desire for freedom, love, protection and various humanly qualities have been inculcated in her. You will feel as Poonachi, if you are the one facing various horrendous situations yet coming out of them gracefully.
Murugan has beautifully captured the essence of being a woman in the soul of Poonachi. The novel is very deep and thought-provoking. It raises various issues that people face. The content is very strong and holds countless teachings that everyone can use for a better life, a better world.
The narration, language, and pace are so beautiful and intriguing that I felt all the emotion she was feeling. I enjoyed and loved reading the book. It is one of the best of my reads of 2019 till now. I highly recommend it to every adult and youngsters.
This is the story of black goat Poonachi- and the way she perceives the human world. This book depicts human world as a whole and the condition of the females in it particularly. This is the story which talks about the struggle of survival, of the adversities of life and the happiness in between, of the changing human love and the oppression by the hierarchy- this is a story of survival. This book is a part of dystopian literature whereby Poonachi is personified to convey to the readers her perils, her emotions and her desires in the journey of life. A lucid writing, a simple story with a powerful underlying meaning- this book in one which shows the life of the ordinary- this book gives the readers a new perspective to the age-old lives they are living. Highly recommending this- read my full review on my blog intothedepthsofbooks.blogspot.com
