The writing is in the small details of the people and their stories that goes in directions that the reader never sees coming. I cannot single out one story as my favorite for I loved them all, each one is on human ties and humane failings and the possibilities of life stories and events just going on its own steam.
I have read many short story collections. BUt this happens to be realistic and significantly different from what i have read earlier. All stories are based on the city of Mumbai and its people. The pains, trials and tribulations of its people.
These stories capture the essence of Mumbai better than anything I've read before (and that includes Manto's stories). Hat tip to the translator for such a phenomenal job! Not once do you trip over an odd twist of phrase or a rough patch that are so common in translations.
Loved the book. Each story beautifully brings out an aspect of the lives of millions of migrants living in the dream city, Mumbai. Empathetic, one would imagine that the author knew his characters personally and intimately... they seem so real. Sad, poignant yet funny and sometimes bizarre the stories will stay with me for sometime.
