Reset Your Echo Device

If your Echo device is unresponsive, or you want to give it to someone else, you can reset the device.

Having trouble with your Echo device? Restart your device first to see if it resolves the problem. To restart your device, unplug the power adapter from the back of the device or from the wall outlet. Then, plug the power adapter back in.

Important: Do not reset or turn off your device if you are setting it up for the first time.

Echo Dot (3rd Generation)

To reset your Echo device, press and hold the Action button for 25 seconds. For setup instructions, go to Set Up Your Echo Dot.

Echo Dot (2nd Generation)

Echo Plus (2nd Generation)

Note: If you plan on gifting your Echo Plus, factory reset your device so that your connected Zigbee devices don't show up in the recipient's account.

To reset your device without losing your smart home device connections, press and hold the Action button for 20 seconds. Wait for the light ring to turn off and on again.

To reset your device to its factory settings, press the Volume Down and Mute button for 20 seconds. Wait for the light ring to turn off and on again.

Note: After factory resetting Echo Plus (2nd Generation), all previously connected smart home devices must be reset in order to be discovered again.

Echo Plus (1st Generation)

To reset your Echo Plus without losing your smart home device connections, use a paper clip (or similar tool) to press the Reset button once and quickly release. Wait for the light ring to turn off and on again.

To reset your Echo Plus to its factory settings, use a paperclip (or similar tool) to press and hold the Reset button for at least 8 seconds. Wait for the light ring to turn off and on again.

Note: After factory resetting Echo Plus, all previously connected smart home devices must be reset in order to be discovered again.

Echo Devices with a Screen

To reset your device to its factory settings:

  1. Say, "Go to settings," or swipe down from the top of the screen and select Settings.
  2. Select Device Options, and then Reset to Factory Defaults. This erases all your personal information and settings on the device.

Echo Sub

To reset your Echo Sub, press and hold the Action button for 25 seconds. For setup instructions, go to Set Up Your Echo Sub.
