Register or Deregister Kindle E-Readers

Register your Kindle to your Amazon account to buy Kindle content and deliver it to your device.

Registration issues can often be caused by incorrect passwords. If you are receiving a password error or if you've forgotten your password, you can request a personalized "password reset" link.

To buy and access your Kindle content, your device must be connected wirelessly and registered to an Amazon account.

Note: If you received your device as a gift, it may need to be deregistered before you can register it to your own Amazon account.

To register your Kindle:

  1. From Home, select the Menu icon, and then select Settings.
  2. Select My account (newer generation devices) or Registration (earlier generation devices).
  3. Specify the Amazon account you want to use:
    • If you already have an Amazon account: Select this option. Enter your Amazon account information. Select Register.
    • If you do not have an Amazon account: Select this option and follow the on-screen instructions to set up a new Amazon account.

Deregister Your Kindle

Deregister your Kindle from your Amazon account if it is registered to the wrong account or if you would like to transfer ownership of your Kindle to another person. You can deregister your Kindle from your Amazon account while using your device or from a computer.

To deregister your Kindle, your device must be connected to a wireless network.

Important: After you deregister your Kindle, the device will be deregistered from your Amazon account and you won't be able to access items stored in your content library.
  1. From Home, tap the Menu icon and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap My account.
  3. Tap Deregister Device and then tap Deregister again to confirm. After you deregister, you can register your Kindle to another Amazon account.

    Note: You can also deregister your Kindle from Manage Your Content and Devices.
