I found this long work of fiction that alternates between reality and magical realism, to be a bit dragged and somewhat pointless. Based on King Oedipus's curse (Greek Mythology) this work tells the stories of two characters named Kafka Tamura, a 15 year old runaway student and that of Nakata, a 60 something dimwit old man in alternate chapters. From fish falling from the sky to cats who talk philosophy and from a 15 year old friendly ghost of a living woman to a rape in a dream, odd events keep happening throughout the story. I found some descriptions to be superfluous.
However, it is full of unexpected twists and yes, magic! It is an enjoyable work and read it esp. if you are a die hard Murakami fan.
