Wow, quite a story! It took me some time, a few pages, to get into the rhythm of the book, of the characters and the household, all told in such intricate style. The story, interspersed with diary entries, as well as some poems and short stories written in the diary by the main protagonist, seems to encompass or touch upon a myriad human emotions. There is an underlying wit that is visible throughout the book.
The story is a narrative through a woman's eyes, of the story of one extended family from a conservative and traditional South Indian town. The book tracks the development of a girl from Southern India, being educated in Delhi. The book also touches upon many customs and traditions of a male dominated society, as well as the growing pangs of a young woman, in parts. But the main stay of the book is the story. The way the story unfolds, the intricacies, the plots and sub plots, the interesting sub stories, all keep one interested and enthralled till the story ends in quite an unexpected manner.
A good read, and in my opinion, if it qualifies, it's a shoo-in for the Booker prize!!
