5.0 out of 5 stars For keeps
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 17 August 2019
It is very meticulously written. Language is simple and it brings out the curiosity of the author to delve into the meaning and origin of an asana. The interesting stories from myghology that are linked with the names of the 30 asanas described in the book, the ethereal pictures, small notes of wisdom in little grey boxes by the author, the stepwise description of the method of doing the asanas and their contraindications, the rangoli like designs on top of the pages, all make the book seem like a fabric woven with a lot of love, care, patience and respect to the practice of yoga, so to speak.

There are many parts that appealed to me especially the asanas associated with the bird and animal world, one being the most favourite, " To become 'friends' with the asana...we need patience and insight. When we understand the nuances of the movement, the asana emerges naturally." Such is the devotion the author has for an asana.
A must read for yoga practitioners. Even if you are not one, the book has stories that can be read at bedtime. Thank you Pragya Bhatt for writing the book and am glad i read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone. Awesome first book.
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 16 August 2019
A delightful book with something for everyone. Interesting stories from Hindu mythology which are linked to the asanas that yogis practice. The stories themselves make a great read even if you are not a yoga practitioner. And for those who do practice yoga, they will find fascinating links to the asanas. And there are great takeaways. For eg: in the chapter about halasana (plough pose), there are two great stories about the totally opposite ways the plough has been used in mythology – King Janak discovers a baby who would be Sita while ploughing and in another story, Lord Balaram uses it as a weapon. And we are reminded that “Just like the earth needs to be ploughed periodically to remain fertile, our minds and bodies must be constantly challenged to remain open, receptive and flexible” and “The circumstances in our lives are the ploughs. It is up to us to use them to either generate growth or escalate decay.”
I would recommend this book for its beautiful pictures, for its compelling stories and the very practical takeaways that can be incorporated by anyone.
