Government of Telangana partners with Amazon India to help weavers sell online
Signs Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Handloom & Textiles to develop and support weavers and artisans from across the state
Telangana, August 7, 2017: In line with its vision to transform the way India buys & sells, Amazon India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Handloom & Textiles, Government of Telangana at an event held today on the occasion of National Handloom Day. The event was graced by Shri. K Taraka Rama Rao, Hon’ble Minister for Handloom and Textile, Government of Telangana, and Telangana Handloom. As part of the partnership, Amazon India will educate, train & enable weavers and artisans to directly sell their products to Amazon customers across the country. With over 17000 handlooms in the state, this association will further help elevate popular handloom products from clusters such as are Pochampally, Warangal, Gadwal, Narayanpet and Siddipet which have a tremendous potential and demand in urban areas.
Amazon India through this association with the weavers and artisans in Telangana will help them boost their business by training them to list and sell their products online on the marketplace. Additionally, Amazon India and the Department will collaborate to conduct various training programs including computer and internet training sessions and registration assistance programs. Amazon India will not only provide an online marketplace for marketing but will also engage with weavers and artisans across the state to train them on making the products more attractive, appealing and marketable across the online domain. The partnership also intends to empower and generate livelihood opportunities and income for the artisans and boost their economy. The partnership, in accordance with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Digital India, also aims to drive digital literacy among the numerous weavers in Telangana. By bolstering digital connectivity of the region, this collaboration will help these entrepreneurs be a part of and benefit from India’s booming digital economy. With the option of selling products online, these weavers and artisans will be able to fetch an appropriate price for their unique products, which in-turn will help raise their overall standard of living.

This initiative will help these local artisans and weavers in showcasing their product which will be available to the massive Amazon customer base across the country.”

Amazon India, over the course of one year, has partnered with various government bodies like DC Handloom, Ministry of Textiles to supplement the efforts of the government to uplift artisans & SMEs across the country. The company has created specialized training modules, conducted workshops with on-ground staff and shared learning resources to help them start & grow their businesses online. Under Amazon India’s ‘Kala-Háat’ program, the company has impacted over 20,000 artisans across 10 clusters in 8 states capturing 7 crafts - Sambalpuri, Kota Doria, Shantipuri, Dhurries, Ikat, Kerala Handloom, Khadi, and Jute - to sell their products online to millions of customers. Through this program and the collaboration with the Ministry of Textiles Amazon India has enabled hundreds of cooperatives and weaver entrepreneurs so far.
All products listed by weavers are available through the ‘Handloom & Handicraft’ store, earlier known as ‘Crafted in India’, on Amazon.in. Launched in 2015, the store aims at bringing the rich Indian heritage of handicrafts and handlooms to Indian consumers’ doorsteps. The store has enabled craftsmen from over 20 regions to come on Amazon.in with products like sarees, jewelry, handbags, shoes and more

Launch of two new clusters on Amazon.in on National Handloom Day
Amazon.in, on the occasion of National Handloom Day today also launched products from two new clusters on its marketplace. Boyanika, one of the oldest names in Odisha handloom, and Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation, known for its original silk sarees comes on board Amazon.in. Now customers from across the country can access these authentic and high quality products such as sarees, home furnishing, women and menswear offered by weavers from the states of Odisha and Karnataka.
