I recommend taking a few deep breaths and some moments of silence as this material is read so that the brain is fresh and see newer perspectives. With these basics, keep an open mind and go through the arguments and reasoning in the book. This book seems to outdate "The brief history of Time" and many other popular cosmology books. Deepak and Menas claim to shake-up the scientists and physicists from their mental blocks by offering them a new paradigm. This book has a lot of promise and is a must for any one who is deeply interested in physics and cosmology. I definitely do not understand the hard-core physics fully and cannot reason about some of the arguments but I can still navigate the book - I recommend that approach to others like me.
I definitely feel that we should not pursue the path to know about any object or the universe without having sufficient knowledge of the subject who makes that attempt. We need to understand the subject which is ourselves better, our limitations etc, before we explore the world perceived by the subject.
I give five stars primarily because it is a very important book to read.
Interpreting the Human body including the brain and mind is a gigantic task which cannot be left to only medical men; everyone including the physicist, psychologist and philosopher must be allowed to contribute. Interpreting the Universe also seems to be beyond human capabilities and there again, why not allow everyone to participate in an attempt to understand it?
If one is interested in brain, mind, matter, consciousness, and qualia, then this book provides a new perspective. In a narrative which includes both quantum and qualia, it is the qualia which win the battle. But to agree to the authors’ speculation or hope that the qualia science would take our civilization in the direction of wholeness, healing and enlightenment requires at least one more reading of the book! The authors try to convince us that the subjectivity is more important than the objectivity of Science and also add that whether it is religion or science, faith is required.
Everyone has his or her unique universe (younique youniverse) as perception differs from person to person; what you perceive is your universe and your reality. Tagore and Walt Whitman are mentioned along with Newton, Einstein, Schrodinger, Feynman, Penrose, Heisenberg, Hawking and many others. Cosmic consciousness and cosmic mind ultimately reign supreme (Are they the New Gods?). I am still trying to figure out what role an individual can play in view of the cosmic supremacy.
I liked the comparison between the brain and the computer. How neuronal activity translates into what we see, smell, hear, taste and speak, we do not know as yet. If you want your neurons to be stimulated and provoked, then this book is for you; it will certainly influence your quadrillion neuronal connections.
Overall this is the book is a good read and tries to answer fundamental questions like What was before Big Bang, Does the universe behave randomly, how the life evolved etc.
