I use the following sources to solve these puzzles: a Walmart map of the 50 states and Canada; the latest Almanac; two college level dictionaries; a one-volume encyclopedia; Merriam Webster's Biographical and Geographical dictionaries; an expensive world atlas; Leonard Maltin's latest Movie Guide; the Film Encyclopedia; the Oxford dictionary of Art and Artists; Stars and Planets; a book on mythology specializing in short biographies of all the gods and goddesses; Roget's Thesaurus; the Oxford English Dictionary in two volumes; a dictionary of Literature; the Bible; Young's Analytical Concordance to the Bible; and language dictionaries. Language dictionaries include French, Spanish, Russian, Italian, German, Japanese, Netherlands, and Latin. If I'm totally stumped and refuse to give up, I might go to [...] , but I do that only in dire circumstances.
For the average college graduate who is a crossword puzzle nut, I don't know of any finer source of satisfaction than these super-fine puzzles.
