“From Yesterday” is a romantic fiction which has three main characters- Anita, Advait and Christina. The story is written in a flashback. The protagonist, Adi aka Advait, a management professional happens to meet Anita, a makeup artist through soulmate.com. Anita is a professionally and financially secured charming beauty with a biiter past. She shares everything about her past relationship with Vanraj and Anand to Advait in their meets. And soon, they fell in love and wanted to settle with each other as husband and wife.
The only hindrance between them was Anita’s age. She was 8 years older than Adi. However, Adi enjoys her company and decided to marry her but Anita’s bitter past continues to haunt her. She was very sensitive, depressed and full of self-doubts. Although she loves Adi but always used to tell him to marry someone of his age, who doesn’t have a haunting past like her.
The voice from the past never let her settle for Adi and she just gets disappeared from his life leaving him clueless. She left a letter to her assistant Hamid as she knows Adi will meet him while looking for her. The letter holds her message that she is leaving the city as she thinks he deserves someone better as he is young and affectionate. Also, she mentioned to keep Hamid updated about his whereabouts whenever he leaves the place.
Adi met a tarot card reader, Ravena, in a club where they become known to each other while dancing. Adi taught her some dance steps and in return she offers a tarot card reading for him. And she predicts for Adi that he will travel abroad and love will enter his life either in a new form or the past will be resolved.
Soon, Adi get to know the company he is working for, posts him in Chicago. He also meets an American beauty Christina who expresses her feelings openly as she feels attracted towards Adi. She was an independent young girl full of optimism. Adi rejected her proposal because of his loyalty towards Anita. Anita was true love of his life. Adi can feel the shadowy presence of Anita around him. About the time, Hamid calls Adi and told he has sent a letter from Anita.
What happens to Anita? Does Adi meet his love of the life? Or Does Christina lose in love? These are the three questions that you’ll get answered when you read the book.
The ending will shock you for sure. I really liked reading the book. The end has touched my heart to the core.
I really recommend this book to everyone for a light reading. The Language is very fresh. The author, Anupam Dasgupta, explained the events very beautifully with perfect choice of words and dialogues. The story has relatively fewer characters which does complete justice to the plot. I like the way this story is explained with minute details that kept me going to read the book in one go. And last but not the least, I love the cover of the book which shows only the shadow of the girl with the boy. The cover itself makes me curious to find out the story behind this scenario.
On going through this book , I raise these questions to myself "Where youngsters belonging to the present generation is heading towards? Are they act responsibly or live their life just like that ? Remaining a spinster or a bachelor for a long time and want to settle at a later age say 37 seems to be the mistake of the individual or the society ?"Which is more important? Professional life or personal one.
"From yesterday " portrays the lifestyle of working women and men, who while away their time in flirting, dating and partying not giving the relevant significance to their personal life albeit in professional life they make all the efforts to come up and achieve a lot .
The Plot :
The protagonist, Adi a management professional happens to meet Anita an orphan . a make-up artist through soulmate.com, a popular social media and they fall in love and they want to get married. The only factor that work s against this is their age. Adi is 28 and Anita is running 37. Still they want to settle in life as husband and wife. In the meantime Anita tells about her affairs with Vanraj and Anand.Even though Vanraj loves her , his erratic immoral acts put a full stop to their relationship. Anand dated her with sincere love, but his family don't agree. They have to part with each other.
The love between Adi and Anita blossoms but their age difference comes as a hindrance . This prompts her to stay away from Adi. On official duty Adi goes to Chicago. There he meets Christina . They feel their love for each other.
What happens to Anita and whether the love between Adi and Christina succeeds are the two significant questions for which the answers we get on reading the book .
This is the first book I read where the story moves on through conversations in Chennai and Chicago. The language is fantastic and fresh. The colloquial style and slangy expressions make the reading interesting and pleasant as we can relate to the story line .
The author ,Anupam a gifted writer has got the ability to pen the events in a pleasing way with the right words.
There are minimum number of characters and they are intelligent and kind hearted and only exertion is Vanraj who indulge in unethical activities.
The sub plots are realistic and unpredictable.Even though there are not so many twists and turns, the way story goes with minute details keep the reader engrossed and works as a page turner.
The title "From yesterday " shows it is a nostalgic journey of the MCs. The cover is beautiful and the only shadow of the girl's along with the hero induces us to find out out the mystery behind such a scenario.
The story line is simple and the climax is shocking .
My favorites :
I like Hamid as he is a sincere and honest assistant of Anita. I give below examples of the words of wisdom sprinkled throughout the book
Life is not momentary . There is always a tomorrow . You hae a bright tomorrow that should not get shrouded by shadows from yesterday.
Life is not about what you have lost in the past. Look ahead . Beckon the new beginnings , brush aside the thorns from the past.
My verdict :
I recommend this book to all for a light and quick reading as it is a great entertainer.
Adi falls in love with Anita almost immediately after they meet for the first time. What started off as a casual online chat, develops into a sweet, caring relationship. But Anita comes with a lot of baggage from her past. Having suffered with relationships and the fact that she is much older than Adi, doesn't make it easy for her to commit wholeheartedly to a fulfilling relationship. When she breaks up with Adi for the very same reason, he is torn apart. Years later, he is in Chicago and meets Christina who seems to have fallen in love with him. But when he sees a reflection of Anita on The Bean, he is confused as to what life has in store for him. Will he meet Anita in Chicago or will he commit to Christina, is for the readers to find out.
First things first. The story line is good, could have made better with more pages and words to describe the character's feelings and emotions, I think. But I can't say I really enjoyed the book mainly due to its not-so-perfect narrative writing style. I felt the scenes (especially when falling in love scenes are described) were rushed. Some dialogues are exchanged and the couple falls in love. It just wasn't convincing. Also, the dialog delivery was not polished enough in my opinion.
With a good story line, From Yesterday could be a perfect book if you just want to pass time or have a casual read that is quick and decent. Last word, satisfactory.
