The Sonos has very limited inputs and outputs and the published 50 wpc specs don't produce a pure powerful sound.
Why buy a Sonos when you can get the pure legendary Yamaha sound at 80 wpc and 0.04 THD ? This thing is amazing, it has so many inputs including digital and analog, and is easily controllable via smartphone/tablet app.
I sold my Sonos connect amp, and for the price I got a used Yamaha R-N500, and I could not be happier with my decision. The sound is way better compared to what the Sonos amp can produce, and it is pure and a joy to listen to. In order to achieve a similar nice sound with Sonos connect u need an external amplifier, almost doubling the price of the Sonos connect.
The smartphone/tablet app can be richer in features, but for the most part it is very functional.
My only regret was not knowing about this product sooner. I wish Yamaha had published the internal DAC specifications, but the sound is excellent via digital input.
I hope Yamaha will release a newer version with more power, and built in wifi in the future. I Can't wait.
It arrived today. Set up was easy. It took longer un untangle the rats nest of old wires than to set up the new unit. I connected my wired network and started to play around. The sound quality is excellent! The choices of inputs are excellent as well. The one great shortcoming is the display panel. I cannot understand why Yamaha would put 1980's technology into this otherwise modern, high quality system. It has a one line 13 character dot matrix display for alpha numeric messages, such as track name, station id etc. beyond me why they cut this corner.
What saves the day is the app. Yamaha NP Controller allows you to pretty much do everything from your android or iOS device. The app is smooth, fast and intuitive. Ps: do not download the Yamaha AV Controller App as it does not apply to this unit.
For years I've stopped at stores looking to replace an ailing 1978 Harmon Kardon 730 twin powered that I stole from my father twenty some years ago. Nothing has really interested me since I prefer the warm sound of older equipment. Sure, features like a remote control would be nice but I was mostly concerned with the sound.
So after the Yamaha R-N500BL was delivered I half-heartedly set it up and connected my iPad to it via USB. Yes, I know an iPad isn't the best audio quality but this receiver was bought for convenience.
The Yamaha was incredible!
Clean and clear for a whole day of listening to many different types of music. At one point my wife came up the stairs to yell at me because the kitchen light fixture was rattling off the ceiling. I think that Yamaha was a little harsh or bright with some songs but my Beovox s80 speakers were always better on the high side. I really never had to adjust the HK much but after almost 30 years together you kind of know what buttons to push and when. I'm really looking forward to getting to know the Yamaha.
It's been MANY years since I went through my playlist looking for a musical adventure. I found myself staring at the speakers in amazement most of the day. My finger on the rewind button listening to the details.
I can't say if there are better or worse products out there and I don't care.
This receiver is FUN!
I have also downloaded the iphone app for controlling the unit. That's also nice and works well... allows for a better user interface for channel selection and net browsing....but there are a few controls missing from it.
Overall a very nice unit and I would recommend it.
