It Is Wood, It Is Stone is a debut novel that takes us through Linda's life after having moved to São Paulo with her husband who is a university professor. This story is about self-reflection, Linda finding her space in a country that is not her own, surrounded by people who know her new home more than she ever will. I did not care for the characters, it felt like there was no depth to the stories. I personally think Marta (Linda's house help) had the most interesting backstory that the author could have dived into more but for some reason, chose not to. Linda struggles with her own identity, her sexuality, comfort zones and more but I felt like there was an imbalance of perspective. We only ever see Linda complain about her problems with no regards to her husband despite the fact that she actively decided to move countries with him. To me, it just felt like she couldn't take responsibility and also cheated on her husband without any remorse.
I wanted this book to be more especially because the story had so much potential and it could have explored several themes such as privilege, classism and sexuality but it only touched the very surface and left it there. I skimmed through this book because it felt so painfully redundant.
My two stars are for the stunning cover, I think one of the most beautiful covers I own and for the potential that this book had.

“A lush depiction of privilege and power, sex and stability . . . following three women in São Paulo . . . It Is Wood, It Is Stone is an elegant arrival of a new talent.”—Elle NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Good Housekeeping • Marie Claire • Harper’s Bazaar • Publishers Weekly With sharp, gorgeous prose, It Is Wood, It Is Stone takes place over the course of a year in São Paulo, Brazil, in which two women’s lives intersect. Linda, an anxious and restless American, has moved to São Paulo, with her husband, Dennis, who has accepted a yearlong professorship. As Dennis submerges himself in his work, Linda finds herself unmoored and adrift, feeling increasingly disassociated from her own body. Linda’s unwavering and skilled maid, Marta, has more claim to Linda’s home than Linda can fathom. Marta, who is struggling to make sense of complicated history and its racial tensions, is exasperated by Linda’s instability. One day, Linda leaves home with a charismatic and beguiling artist, whom she joins on a fervent adventure that causes reverberations felt by everyone, and ultimately binds Marta and Linda in a profoundly human, and tender, way. An exquisite debut novel by young Brazilian American author Gabriella Burnham, It Is Wood, It Is Stone is about women whose romantic and subversive entanglements reflect on class and colorism, sexuality, and complex, divisive histories.

It is rare that I like a book, but I am happy to say that I was very pleased with this one. The author has fantastic command of narrative techniques and language. The narrative felt very natural - the character's fears, hopes, goals and dreams were portrayed in such a nuanced, effortless way that it made me feel like I was in the hands of a true professional. I was excited to see that publishers still bring books on the market that are written by talented people.
I loved the portrayal of Sao Paulo and the maid Marta - it felt very immersive. I was also pleased that there were genuinely likeable characters to follow. Even though the protagonist is objectively rather annoying, I felt sympathy for her and was intrigued by her choices and inner world and particularly loved how she was put into subtly depicted, complicated relationships with the other characters - loved the interactions between her and the provost's wife and Marta. I applaud the author for creating such real, human characters and maintaining a natural narrative tone and letting the story reveal itself through the inner world of the protagonist. Well done.
Would highly recommend. Beautiful read.

after finishing this book, I found it was not memorable. I suppose you could rate this story as a drama, but truth be told, there was little. ...at least of any consequence.

Drew me in as if privy to private mutterings and necessary confessions. There was a gentle movement from chapter to chapter as if I was in a melodic dance with the writer. Lovely
