Honestly speaking this book reminds me of my childhood days. Those days, I was very fond of Akbar Birbal storybooks. Each story narrated a problem that Akbar and his people faced, and how Birbal used to come up with ingenious solutions. Similarly, in this book, in each chapter, I find that there was a challenging problem and how Alok turned it into an opportunity and gained benefits out of it.
Apart from business lessons for the entrepreneurs, I also find great "moral" lessons like - honesty, accountability, and trust in God/Guru.
Thanks a ton Alok once again for enriching my life by sharing your experiences, learnings, and takeaways.
Each chapter is awesome. Concise but to the point. Read each chapter twice, lest I missed something. Each reading I grabbed a little more insight.
Have been referring to his articles for sometime now and had the opportunity to talk to him for some advice recently. He is consistent in what he has been sharing again n again, said the same things to me on phone and amazing to see the same in the book too.
Each story has one or two gems hidden, with a different learning but still each conmected to the others.
And Wow!! What amazing storytelling boss!!!
Best part is learning from each chapter ... I really wish many people read this and learn these simple basic things to get ahead in there own journey.
It is extremely timely, as it shows the tests and tribulations that awaits any entrepreneur in his journey, and shows the level of courage and persistence one need to even build a decent business (leave apart a legacy). It reminds that luck plays a very important role, and humbleness is underrated. And hence, re-emphasize that the journey is more important than the destination.
It is very critical at this stage when entrepreneurship has become a fashion statement for many.
Read this book to experience some parts of this fantastic journey and learn those lessons that you can only learn after going through the grind. In this book, it is about Alok's journey, but it can be anyone - the ups and downs, the fundamental learning will almost be similar. I can relate to many of the lessons myself and wish I had received and learnt from them two decades back when I started my journey. I hope aspiring entrepreneurs take the advantage of reading and reflecting on them and save a lot of time, pain and money by avoiding mistakes.
Thank you Alok for writing this one. I will be gifting this to many young aspirants.
P.S.: it is still not as good as some of your deeply inspiring long FB posts.
Alok is the one who pioneered Mobile Value Added Services in the country and had working relations with every telecom operator in the country. Much later copy cats like the listed Onmobile and PayTM’s parent One97 came in the field and depressed margins. To have pioneered the ubiquitous short code and caller tunes is not a small feat.
He’s one of those rare entrepreneurs who has tasted success in each and every one of his endeavors, so obviously there’s lot to learn from his book.
Success usually leads to pride but here is a rare combination of a man with success and no tinge of pride which is what makes his book even more relevant.
I have read so many business books written by entrepreneurs that spend so much time talking about circumstances in which they were born, their early years in school, including needless details of their stupid pranks in school etc. This book cuts to the chase. Every chapter from the word go, is a 3 page intriguing episode in his life followed by half a page informing the reader of his learnings.
You need people like Alok to teach entrepreneurship at colleges and spawn a 100,000 entrepreneurs. But until Niti Ayog or the concerned people up there take note and invite him to the colleges, just buy a copy of this book and devour it page to page asap, as I did.
