Why I Stopped Wearing My Socks by Alok Kejriwal is a rewarding book that entertains as much as it inspires.
So let me get this out of the way first: Why I Stopped Wearing My Socks by Alok Kejriwal is an excellent book. So good, that it belongs amongst the better self-help books out there – as a guide for the average or audacious entrepreneur, a manual for the new-to-startups person, and also as a page-turner of an entertaining book. If you haven’t read it, buy it.
Why I Stopped Wearing My Socks by Alok Kejriwal is also a collection of intriguing, exciting reminiscences of the milestones of Alok’s professional career – from age 16 or so up – and very conversationally, simply, pithily told; hence, an entertainer too. So what is this? A self-help manual, or a gripping story of a young man’s career? It is both, and more.
Why I Stopped Wearing My Socks is the coming of professional age – and great success and the lessons therefrom — of a young Marwari ‘çhhora’. Blessed to be born in a well-to-do, educated and forward-looking family, young Alok is encouraged to try out different things as he goes about ‘checking things out’, trying to create value for himself by creating value for others.
Navigating the rough and the smooth as he attempts to familiarise himself with the intricacies of businesses and of making money from each experience, Alok keeps moving forward with invaluable learnings. Till he decides, fairly early in his career, that he will not ‘wear’ the socks of his family hosiery business, and takes the visionary decision of setting his sights on a completely different career path to become India’s first true visionary entrepreneur in the internet.
And so, passionately convinced and extremely well informed, Alok embarks with single-minded focus upon creating, growing and building contests2win.com and Mobile2win.com that, in a remarkable endorsement of his vision, sweat, strategy and blood, he finally sells to none other than The Walt Disney Company.
Why this is a great read is the interesting story line of each brief chapter, the learnings of a respected, experienced leader of stature who disarmingly speaks with and doesn’t talk to his reader. The conversational, simple and smooth writing seal – if you will pardon the cliché – the deal. No wonder it is the #1 book on entrepreneurship on Amazon
I see that Why I Stopped Wearing My Socks appeared on Amazon in September 2018, and since then, has been amongst the Editor’s Picks, garnering much praise from reviewers. Of around 278 buyer reviews till about a week or less back, 90% have given it five stars, and 9% have given it four stars.
The book defies you to put it down, or to not highlight and mark out the scores of nuggets of insightful, actionable wisdom on its pages. Little gems that are worthy of becoming mottos for anyone who wants to be not just a good professional, but also a good human being. But don’t get me wrong – even though it is full of invaluable advice, nowhere does this book become preachy or didactic; instead, it works under the radar and keeps you engaged, entertained and inspired.
One of the numerous learnings Alok shares in this book is the importance of great storytelling, and Alok’s smooth, Orwellianly simple writing with short sentences and short words, has you hooked and happily hurtling along a roller-coaster story.
So to my mind, this is definitely the best self-help book by an Indian or any author in the last year – an arresting and inspiring story of beating the odds and keeping up the passion with unwavering motivation and smarts. Equally, this book is an entertaining page turner. And also a book that’s a how-to of good written communication, of simple and effective storytelling, and of creating content that is engaging and meaningful.
Together, all these ‘books’ in Why I Stopped Wearing My Socks will inspire you no end.
Why this is a great read is the interesting storyline of each brief chapter, the learnings of a respected, experienced leader of stature who disarmingly speaks with and doesn’t talk to his reader. The conversational, simple and smooth writing seal – if you will pardon the cliché — the deal. No wonder it is the #1 book on entrepreneurship on Amazon.
Each chapter ends with some important learnings Alok gleans from its events.
Some 'learnings' that make this book a great read:
‘If you get used to cheating and manipulating people and businesses for quick, selfish gains, it quickly becomes your nature… I have realized that by pursuing pure, unadulterated businesses, an entrepreneur can get the best out of himself and his team and the goal of the enterprise then becomes the search for excellence, not the management of lies.’
And...
I firmly believe that entrepreneurs and professionals must meet at least one new person daily in their lives. It does not matter what the agenda is or how the discussion pans out.
And...
A young colleague taught me what I refer to as the ‘creativity of naivety’. The concept is simple: when your mind is pure and not clouded by any preconceived notions, you have amazing clarity, and breakthrough ideas emerge.
Plus...
I have learned that for a successful sales person, sacrificing profit margins, underselling, competing blindly (often to prevent someone else from getting an order) should never be an option. You must boldly say ‘not interested’ and move on. Trust me, if your product or service is valuable and will value to your customer, they will call you back.
As a seller, I have learnt that come what may, I will never lose or compromise my self-respect for anything , leave along a business deal. Losing dignity means stooping below the threshold of purpose, intent, and effort.
The lessons from each entertaining story written with remarkable simplicity and directness make this one of five books from 2018 that you absolutely must read.
Firstly I was quite impressed by the catchy title of this book ( and why not.. this is authored by one of the Masters in Business Creativity & Personal Branding )
As Alok Kejriwal is quite prolific speaker, content creator and has an amazing habit of sharing his experiences , I kind of knew a bit about his life, business ventures, successes even before picking this book.
So though there are few chapters in this book which has been shared earlier, this still has lot of valuable experience shared in a simple and relatable language.
The first few chapters are about author’s experiences as the new generation youngster in a Indian Family Business . And I found this part to be a bit slow, though not boring.
But the pace picked up very fast as it moves to the path of Digital Entrepreneurship ( Contests/ Gaming /Mobile and all) and the China business.
If you want to know how the late 90s were for Indian Digital, Media , Mobile & Ad business, you can get lot of real experiences by shared by the author.
This books share interesting stories around evolving Indian TV Content in late 90 For eg. a sneak peek into the minds working to make Indian adoption of American Idol( as Indian Idol), Who wants to be a Billionaire ( to KBC) a success.
Beside there are some very exciting pieces like selling the SMS Voting platform idea to the egoistical Govt. officials at BSNL.,
Also, going through this book you can feel author’s deep belief in spirituality, his Guru and Karma
This is another reason that will bring an admiring 😊 on your face as you turn the pages !!
Suggestion to readers : This is a light read, should be picked and read with an open mind and would really help build your belief in smart work and a maintaining a fine balance between being thinker and being doer.
Expectation(from the Author) : Refer the last part of the Book, Entrepreneur Speak , there is a nice piece on “Sales- The Holy Science” . It would be a make an interesting read if there is a book with more similar insights on Sales. Who know you might already be working on one !!

Author Alok Kejriwal is talking about his real life experiences regarding starting his own business from a simple idea. His journey from family business to start his own business in a complete different domain is wonderful.
How he overcame different obstacles to start his own business and his dealings with corporate culture, venture capitalists, office politics, learnt technical things regarding family own socks business, family politics, no authority in family business, developed understanding of European sock market, work life balance, experience in China, big scale market in China and finally Disney bought his company.
A genuine story of a South Mumbai (India) based boy's struggle to embrace Indian corporate world without any experience and support from any godfather. Dreams unlimited at very young age and dead hard struggle to achieve them. Great learnings.
A must read book for a Business and Management students, business owners, new startup and corporate world.
Thank you Alok Kejriwal for writing and sharing such a wonderful book. All the best. Keep going :)

The book is filled with good lessons for what makes good ideas blossom into good businesses. That perseverance is key. That all that glitters may not be gold. He is ejected from his own company and though dejected it turns out to be the best thing that happened to him both because he stumbled onto the best idea (games2win) but also because his previous company faces unexpected headwinds.
The discussion on sales, on negotiations and on being relentless in closing deals is a masterclass that all entrepreneurs need to heed. He tells the story of how when investors turned down his request for additional financing at the onset of the crash following the dot-com collapse, he is contemplating downsizing his team to weather the storm when his colleague tells him that they should look to grow their revenue. One month of relentless calling and closing got them on a track to weather the storm and become profitable ever since!
It closes with this gem that Alok got from his father who observed when Alok broke the news that he wanted to step away from the family business (socks, hence the name of the book) and start his own business (contests2win). His dad listened and then observed "everything starts small." That this obvious piece of advice is non-obvious is illustrated by the number of companies that grow too fast and then fall apart!
Great book. Great read.

The book triggered memories as I recalled snippets of so many conversations I have had with Alok sprinkled over the past few decades. Alok has weaved an inspiring narrative, connecting the dots, learning from his experiences, and sharing it eloquently and succinctly to create a shared learning experience for all.
Alok’s book is exactly like him – irrepressible! It conveys his passion for excellence, his unbridled enthusiasm to innovate, and his tremendous tenacity and fortitude. It is truly a celebration of entrepreneurship!
The book has left an indelible impact on me. Thank you Alok for taking me on this journey with you!
