Product description

From Booklist

Ages 5-8. The author bases her original story on Jewish folklore, which claims that King Solomon's ring enabled him to talk with animals. A teenage Solomon spies a wounded lioness while hunting. Stirred by pity, he prevents a fellow hunter from killing her and instead spends the Sabbath tending the lioness and feeding her two cubs. Years pass, and Solomon becomes a man of wisdom with riches that include a ring that allows him to speak with the animals. But eventually Solomon forgets his power is a gift, and he is no longer a benevolent ruler. Now he, too, hunts for pleasure. Attacked by a lion in the forest, Solomon is about to die, when the grizzled lioness that he saved appears in the clearing and stops her son from killing the king. In a moment of transformation, Solomon realizes how far he's strayed from his days as a sensitive young man and is humbled by his memories. At Solomon's invitation, the lions visit the palace, and "the people of Israel never again hunted for pleasure." Although a bit message-heavy, the story is gracefully told with a nice blend of action and contemplation. The same can be said of the full-page paintings that overcome occasional stiffness to capture the evolution of a king, who is spiritually rescued by the animals he once helped. Ilene Cooper
