a choice to get up, step out, and live fully” -Oprah
What I like about this book is how the media mogul Oprah winfrey staunchly advocates listening to your gut feeling, your intuition, trusting in God and working towards your dreams. What made me want to read this book is to know what she has learned after interviewing so many people and after so many shows.
when she was busy promoting a movie some one asked her “what do you know for sure Oprah” and she was literally stumped by that question. She thought the interviewer was asking about the movie she was promoting, at that time she mumbled something and got away from that tricky position. However that question kept haunting her since then so much so that it became one of her columns in her magazine and also the title of this memoir.
This book is a series of essays about things that matter the most to her like eating and growing veggies in her garden, eating fresh food, drinking her favorite masala tea, being in the moment and enjoying the now, spending time with her friends, her reading habits, her love for her dogs, her troubled times both personally and professionally, her mentor Maya Angelou’s advice about believing people when they show what they are for the first time so on so forth.
While reading the book you realize that Oprah was not the most secure person, she had doubts like everyone else thinking that she is not good enough, her looks are not good enough, she is not the perfect size, shape etc….then she realizes to accept her flaws and strengths and be ok with that…and once she accepted herself a wave of contentment washed over her and she started becoming more authentic …more herself.Oprah has turned her wounds into wisdom for the entire world, she opens up about love not hurting us, how she has been through some really bad relationships which taught her a lot (cue for all the ladies in toxic relationships)
By the end of the book you realize she becomes more evolved as a person more comfortable in her skin and her love for gratitude journal that literally changed her life when she started keeping a gratitude journal everyday thanking God for the 5 blessings. She attributes her success to be able to listen to her gut feeling, intuition and also trusting God to use her (was her constant prayer while she was growing up) .she always knew her calling is not something others say you should be but rather living out your own dreams by listening to that still small voice that speaks to us in whispers, listen to it and act on it, irrespective of what others say about your choices and be brave to be open to judgments.
Reading this book makes u believe in dreams coming true and it gives you that push to actually go for your dreams as Oprah says “you are built not to shrink down to less but to blossom into more”
Read it ! ! for the dreamer in you
Amazon service is top notch, got the book in advance
Also it’s a nice hard back you will fall in love with reading it and also savoring it .
The content might seem repetitive if you read a lot of self-help or spirituality books (Eckhart Tolle and Maya Angelou are quoted many times). The stories she has written about her life all centre around the same idea - of being present, of loving yourself, of helping others, of setting boundaries, of being humble, practising daily gratitude etc. etc. But they are written in a very down-to-earth style: nowhere would you feel you are reading a book by a mega-celebrity.
[I bought the hardcover edition to the book and it looks like a cute coffee table book, complete with a ribbon marker. The cover doesn't look exactly like the one shown in the picture, but it is very beautiful and so are the fonts and layout. It reads as a delightful handbook on life- you can open any page and it's a different story, so it doesn't have to be read in sequence.]
"Most of us are loaded with Original Sin, but a surprising number of us – not me, God knows – are loaded with Original Virtue. Ain’t that sweet?"
- Kurt Vonnegut
Reading someone's life and what that person believes in, can sometimes help you realize what good virtues you hold. If one's not sure of his/her own virtues, can try this One. It might sound ridiculous, who wont be aware of their holding virtues? But it does happen sometimes; we feel lost somewhere at somepoint of our life. People at such circumstances can count on this book. I will if i ever get to that situation. I know that for sure :)

Feels like your friend is talking to you. Oprah through this book talks about the important aspects of life – Joy, Resilience, Connection, Gratitude, Possibility, Awe, Clarity & Power. She takes us through her life journey quoting scenarios & examples that she faced. The book re-iterates the known facts of life – simple things lead to true happiness, not giving up, be grateful to what we have, etc.
The writing is absolutely simple which makes this an easy read. Its an absolute feel good book. A must read.
The message I got is that be yourself and be happy, not wait for someone makes you happy.
Doesn't it have much common with philosophy I can see a lot in India?
