I received the "bowtie" or "sideways eight" version with red fluid.
It's fairly straight (in the stock photos it's just plain crooked -- I'm surprised they used that as an example). But despite this arriving in tact -- thankfully -- it's plainly delicate glass. This causes me a little concern as it is intended as a gift to a 7 year old, but if he breaks it, it will simply be a lesson learned.
The reaction of the one I received is extremely fast. I mean, nearly instant fast. Cup the bottom, and *swoosh* the fluid rushes up. My recollection is these being a little more leisurely.
Same with the release: you can set it down and let it cool / return normally, or you can lightly grip the top bulb and almost immediately force the fluid back into the lower chamber.
Cool for what it is. I would have preferred something more durable.
the 2 cons:
- 1) comes in a cheesy box that says 'love thermometer' on it instead of handboiler (leaving me having to hide the boxes because that phrase around 13 yr olds means they'll be more focused on 'love' than the lesson), reaaaaally would of preferred the more professional/classic box I've seen them in in the stores that label it for what it is, not a gimmick
-2) glass is even and it doesn't sit even. it barely sits up because the weight of the unevenly made neck (neck doesn't go straight up as pictured, kind of leans, I guess from the glass pulling process?) and so you have to either hold it or keep it in the box, can't sit it down. my saddest part with the glass is one of the kids was holding the top bulb to make the liquid go back down and the top just snapped off in her hand; and she was being gentle...I was watching her).
other than these issues, I really do like this product and would buy these again (providing my normal store is out of stock again)
