Gol maal , Chupke chupke, Mili, Guddi.. what do you think of when you think of these classic Hrishikesh Mukherjee movies? A middle class wholesomeness to life, to romance, that was always so heartwarming. Reading Andaleeb Wajid's 'It was always you' took me on a journey of that kind in all the good ways. Family, the whole shebang of extended family - your mom's many bitchy aunts, pedantic uncles, your dad's second cousins who usurped some property, the doddering grannies, gaggle of relatives as commentators seem to be a constant in Andaleeb's stories. For me, this is what there was before families became distant, physically and emotionally. It came as a lovely surprise to realise that right in the city I live in, these worlds still exist in the now. Yet, while Naima and Uzair come from large, always- in-your-face families, they are today's people. With today's wishlists.. be it a Sabyasachi lehnga or a dazzling destination wedding in the Maldives.
'It was always you' also surprised me beautifully in the skilful way Wajid made me grow to love Uzair, who is not really your alpha hero. In fact, he's Naima's dad's assistant, in the unhappy situation of having to plan her wedding extravaganza. Here again, memories of Amol Palekar, always the underdog, secretly yearning after Vidya Sinha on bus journeys come to mind. It's refreshing to read a romance where the characters are everyday people, especially the hero. And the heroine's growth is believably built - from an entitled, childlike person, to a person who is able to reinvent herself and go after what she wants.
Two more things. One, Yash Chopra productions would approve this book for a screen adaptation, just for the gorgeous and cinematic scenes set in gorgeous Maldives. Two, for all the family presence in the story, and the wholesomeness - there is plenty of sizzle in this romance. Hrishida would have blushed. I didn't. I re-read some bits in fact.

I've become SUCH a fan of Andaleeb's writing. Her books strike the right balance of romance, passion and fun, relatable characters. I'm on to book 2 and cannot wait! After decades of reading Mills and Boons set in NY and London and Rome, it's so lovely to have romantic fiction set here in Namma Bengaluru. Way to go Andaleeb!❤️

I don't often gush in my reviews but Naima and Uzair are special. Their story is real, honest and has so much heart. One of the strongest parts of this story for me was Naima's character growth. I started of wondering what Uzair saw in her but by the end I was more than halfway in love with her myself.
I'm a huge fan of angsty love stories and this one has angst and conflict aplenty. You need to read this story to see how Andaleeb unravels it all. It tackles several sensitive societal issues while staying relatable and true to its core.
I've always been a fan of Andaleeb's work and so, I don't say this lightly, but this book might be one of her best so far!

Every single time I am stressed and need a breezy, easy but fulfilling book to read, I pick up Wajid's book. Helps that there are so many!
This is a classic romance novel filled with enough drama and just about enough melodrama to make it relatable to anyone. All Indian homes during a wedding are stressful places to be at. And Naima's home, therefore, feels immensely real. Andaleeb's mastery of this genre is clear now. Her ability to write out very vivid intimate scenes is admirable. Not once does it fall flat or seem exaggerated. I am hoping there is a Kimmy-Khalil sequel planned!

This has been undoubtedly my best read so far! I may probably say this statement to all of Andaleeb's books. "It Was Always You" is breathtakingly fresh, breezy and peppy story. Once started, i just could not put it down. The characters are so real.
Thank you Andaleeb, though am little disappointed to know that i have to wait till next year to read your next book.

Loved the story, pace, romance track, language!

One of the best romantic novels I read this year, through Kindle "reading insights", this year I had read 96 titles, this was 97th, first from this author, I should say, I didn't think I would connect to the characters and I thought I may barely complete it for the sake of it. It's due to main characters are muslims and I would not understand the customs but I did connect to Uzair's as well. It made me realise, Love is love, it is a religion on it's own. I'm sure going to read rest of the novels from this author and I'm sure, I'll love all of it.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author - but it won’t be the last.
Right from the start, I was engrossed in the story. I alternated between wanting to smack the heroine upside the head, wanting to kiss the hero senseless, and visualizing the grand wedding and Maldives setting. At first, I wasn’t very fond of Naima because she seemed spoiled, entitled and brusque. But then she really came alive and emotional and changed, and I started understanding her better. As for Uzair, he seemed to die for, not just drop-dead gorgeous but determined and loyal and helplessly infatuated. There was a lot of very Bollywood-style drama that I enjoyed immensely, and the chemistry between these two sizzled explosively.
I devoured this book in one day and am now going to amuse myself by imagining it as a daily soap or movie.

Oh, my goodness. I did not expect this story about a spoiled rich girl and her father’s employee to touch my heart so.
The angst and frustration was all worth it. Watching Naïma and Uzair both grow and change and become worthy of each other was simply delightful.

This was the first time I read anything by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed the book frompage 1 to the very end. The characters were extremely well portrayed and I was left with a strong curiosity of carrying on reading the next books in the series.
