I was having to ration myself for fear of coming to the end too soon.
The kind of book that reminds us what it means to be alive.
US is a perfect book.
This very funny, wise and bittersweet novel was in my view even more enjoyable than Nicholls' previous bestseller One Day.
As he proved in One Day, Nicholls is brilliant at picking apart modern life with all its hopes, disillusionments and regrets, and marrying it to a gently heartbreaking narrative.
The Man Booker Prize-longlisted follow-up to the multimillion-copy bestselling ONE DAY.See all Product description

Us is a very touching story about a family of three...n the incidents n situations seem very familiar n relatable...
Anyone who loves to read slow narratives...this is the one...It is a page turner n stays with u for a long time...
The first sign that this was no ordinary book comes when it was selected for the Man Booker Prize Longlist. For sure it’s a great honor, but many prestigious award winning books do not always turn out to be a great read. However, my fear was totally unfounded as David Nicholls’ latest book, Us, is a well-conceived story, almost flawless in its execution, with characters that danced through its pages, guiding the reader along, as one navigates life’s treacherous paths with its central character Douglas Peterson.
What is remarkable about Us by David Nicholls is not the storyline. Simply stated, it is a simple one. Douglas Petersen is an affable middle-aged biochemist planning to go on a grand tour of Europe with his wife of twenty years, Connie, and their seventeen-year-old son, Albie. Just a few days before they are to set off for the tour Connie dropped a bomb-shell when she announced that she is leaving him. It would be an understatement to say Douglas is shocked. He is confronted with the proverbial dilemma, whether to abandon the plan altogether or still go ahead and try to win back the heart of his wife and win the respect of his son.
Heartwarming and heartbreaking, funny and delightful, what makes Us by David Nicholls sinks into one’s psyche is its superb exploration of the relationship between Douglas and Connie, as well as between Douglas and his son Albie. Nicholls skillfully brings to the fore their incompatibilities as well as differing principles on how to raise their son. It is not a story filled with superficial idealism but the harsh realities of life into which the author sprinkles doses of wit and humor, pain and realism, and in the process crafted a story that truly touches the heart. In short, it is about relationship, family, human traits, individuality and how we react to the things around us. Wonderfully told, as only David Nicholls can!
