Golden Gate", to a monumental work of fiction. "A Suitable Boy",
and now to a meticulously researched biography, "Two Lives".
The two lives are those of his Asian Indian grand-uncle and his
German Jewish wife.
The book is of immediate interest because of the detail it gives
on living in pre-Hitler Germany, Hitler's Germany,World War II
as experienced by the dentist uncle, the Holocaust in which mother and sister of the Jewish wife are destroyed, and post-war
The author is meticulous to the extent that he visits the battle-
ground in Monte Cassino where the uncle lost his right arm, and
on a visit to Israel tracks down the names and transports which carried his wife's mother and sister to their deaths.
The book has thought-provoking commentary on the legacy of Germany, and on the married life of two very dissimilar people.
The book is recommended reading for those interested in pre- and
post-war Europe, in the courage of ordinary mankind as exemplified by the dentist uncle, and in the integrity of his wife.
It is a long and detailed book but the reader's interest rarely flags.
