Twists of Fate Paperback – 1 Dec 2014
As kids, we thought grown-ups had so much fun. How we wished we could grow up fast. If only we knew what we were wishing for. Three pieces of a soul, they'd call themselves soul sisters and this is their journey, a journey through the lives of three best friends who accidentally reunite after a decade long disconnection. A round of startling revelations later, the three realize that life is indeed unpredictable. However, in this world of uncertainty, there is just one thing they can still be sure of their friendship! With secrets confessed, pain shared, tears shed and troubles discussed, they help find answers to each other's problems, just like old times. Each has a lesson to learn from the other, a story to tell, a reason to say 'I'm sorry' and a reason to say 'Thank you'. Has destiny brought them together to complete the picture? Will they succeed in finding the missing pieces? Can every twist of fate be interpreted in just one way? Join Sharvari Joshi, Parizaad Sethna and Nandini Mazumdar in a nostalgic journey from girlhood to womanhood. 'Twists of Fate' promises to be a roller coaster ride of emotions that will captivate the reader's heart and leave him pondering on life, fate and all its conspiracies.

Tout de suite, I was bowled over by the mastery over the language and the brilliant vein in which Mumbai was described in the prologue. The trio of characters have been wonderfully portrayed; they are complicated and layered, yet very easy to relate to. I couldn't help recalling the characterization which I have used in my debut novel and reflect how I could have genuinely enhanced it whilst perusing Twists of Fate.
I couldn't locate any grammar mistakes in the book. The language, as mentioned heretofore, is exceptional, neither too colloquial, nor too clunky. The story is extremely captivating, oodles of twists and turns, non-linear mostly, and quite emotional in places. The reader gets immersed in the story instantly, experiencing a multitude of emotions en route. Priyanka has maintained a perfect balance between dialogues and narration. Usage of Hindi words is minimal - how it should be, so that when they appear they feel extremely apt for the situation. Instead of cheesy shayaris, beautiful snippets of poems are employed, adding grace and class to the novel. Withal, The plot is very realistic and unlike any stilted Bollywood script.
Finally, I would like to say that skillful and talented authors like Priyanka Naik - who have worked assiduously on their script - need to be encouraged and supported instead of mass audience targeting authors - who don't work hard on their script and employ poor language, disgusting grammar, and juvenile narration skills. I would rate this splendid effort 4.8/5. The 2 points I have reduced is because, as an upcoming author myself, I have the right to be hyper-critical ;). Priyanka could have described the environment also in a few more places (like the weather, condition of the room, place etc.), instead of directly commencing with the story, especially in the beginning of a few chapters. She has described environments so magically in a few places; she could have used it more; I relish such parts, lends a magical, literary feel to the situation. Nonetheless, an impeccable literary masterpiece by the author - substantially better than efforts by even popular bestselling authors of our time. Will pre-order her next book, indubitably. Cheers!
The story starts as they step into the world full of self-discovery and understanding the influx of new hormonal changes, a time just before stepping into ‘the’ teenage. Phase, when we start to get introduced and choose ‘n’ pick relations other than our family and friends. The three girls have their own shares of pie called ‘life’ and twists start pouring in.
The three friends represent three strata of society and hence three different perceptions of the developments occurring in their lives. Such a game is played by destiny that gaps start building amongst them and leads to a closure of communication and a void prevails. In this due course they live their own lives with bitter and better experiences only to meet with each, one fine day.
Soul sisters separated (by) seven seas! What was the secret behind this strong relationship? Was this friendship a reality at all? Then, what made them fall apart? Years later, how did they bump into each other? What made them meet each other? What influences they had on each other, their families and in their lives? Was this all a conspiracy or confusion or just another ‘twist of fate’ that churned them down and left marks on their paths? What will be the outcome – as they plan to move ahead – will they proceed in one direction or in different directions? And, how the romance drives their lives go crazy? These are certain questions, whose answers conjure up to compile the content of the story.
We all have spent our childhood with our friends and their memories are still afresh in our minds. What if we get a chance to read our lives (in past years)? I guess we all will be ready to experience that freshness and closeness once again. Indeed, we would once again, wish to relive those cherished memories of the past life one more time. Just like your own story you will find the warmth of parental love in conversation with parents, the care and tease in petty fights with the siblings, the attachments and sense of belongingness with friends, the security of confidante in the pals, the hormonal rush experienced with merely a glance of first love, the sense of responsibility in hard times, the commitment towards our families, the courage to stand tall to face the bad world and that journey of becoming a mature individual, mature enough to admit mistakes and lastly, the faith in long lost friendship. What more could you ask for from a memoir?
Priyanka claims this work to be inspired from her personal life and this reflects in way of expression of thoughts and thought process followed. Every conversation is emotional and sentimental enough to revoke your rude reaction and run into the arms of your loved ones. The sensitivity and sensibility depicted in the characters of three little fairies is really charming. The smooth flow events and following reactions are easily relatable. How the communication gap develops and how the friends flow with the tides of time is very evidently structured. The mention of a genetic disorder and its effects on the psyche was really painful and reduced me to tears. It was hard for me keep myself balanced. Later in the story, the coming together of friends is equally heart warming and you will feel like hugging your own childhood friends. Though, this story centres around three female friends, the boys might find it to be an impressive gift to their lady love who are book lovers as well.
The best part was how the parents play a crucial role of being a mentor for their children and their friends as well. Sometimes, it might be through an indirect channel but at that point as well, it is equally influential and soothing. Have you already started longing for your friends? Let us celebrate friendship by grabbing a copy for ourselves and securing a few for those blessed angels of ours, the childhood friends!
And...coming to the book.
Wows (the positive aspects)
Unlike any of the other bestsellers currently in the market (I've read some..too much boldness and lack of a story), Priyanka chose a subject not many debutants try to attack on in their debut. Life, and its complexities. How is the day going to end? What experience will I get from it and how? How is fate gonna test me? This novel, deals with my last question.
Characters: The storyline is centered on the life of three best friends - Sharvari, Pari, and Nandini. And their struggles with the twists of fate that are continuously tossed at them at varied lengths by life.
Speaking of the philosophical context in the novel, may lead me into giving out a lot of spoilers (some reviews have spoiled already, ouch!) so I'll frame it like this.
This novel has a lot to offer to the readers in terms of philosophy. Each character, every chapter, every twist of fate and every occurrence has its own beauty in matters of enlightening the reader.
Oops! (the negative aspects)
As a reviewer, I love pointing out the bad parts. But to my sheer luck, there were none bad parts in this book...whatsoever!
I guess that should be enough for a non-spoiler review. xP
