Tompkin’s School: For The Extraordinarily Talented by Tabi Slick is a thrilling YA paranormal book. It follows the story of Izara Torvik when she moves to a boarding school in Oklahoma with her twin brother Kain. They soon discover that there is something sinister about the school and find something weird happening to them in the midst of it.
The book starts a bit slow but soon becomes very intriguing and mysterious. The writing is simple and good. I liked that the book was organized and well paced.
Plot
The history of the school forms the base of the plot. It is a very original concept and I loved it! The time-travelling bit was a bonus. It fits perfectly in the book and doesn’t distract us from the plot. I also liked how the supernatural element slowly starts to come in and the creatures are different than the typical paranormal. However, I found it weird that the characters got comfortable with the idea of killing so soon and were not freaking out.
The mystery is one of the key elements of the book. It made the book exhilarating and enjoyable to read. The things that kept happening to Izzy and Kain made me want to keep reading and know more. The pace of the mystery is good. The plot is unpredictable and the suspense keeps us eager to know more.
The book did seem a little cliche at some points. The romance felt irrelevant and present just for the sake of it. The book seems light-hearted enough in the beginning but starts getting dark and violent halfway through. It was sudden and felt a little out of place.
Characters
The characters were simple and cool. I liked the main character Izzy. She is confident and quirky, a contrast to her brother Kain. There is also a little bit of diversity in the book.
Conclusion
This book is overall a very enjoyable and exciting read. It had a lot of different elements combined and was different than any YA book I’ve read before. The suspense and mystery kept me reading. The book gets quite intense towards the end and ends on a cliffhanger that leaves the readers wanting more.
I would say that this is an excellent debut by the author. It is a good start to a promising series and I highly recommend it!

Izara and Kain have to learn their place in a new world and find out why students at their new school keep going missing.
They learn about their me abilities and how to control them, whilst keeping to their first challenge of finding a journal that will help to explain everything.
This book is a must read for all lovers of the supernatural

Tabi Slick has done an incredible job in writing Izara, she is strong and yet still vulnerable. Izzy makes mistakes. And that's what we do as teenagers trying to find where we fit in the world. To paraphrase Buffy, she's cookie dough that's not finished baking yet, she gets through a day at a time until she's done. Izzy isn't perfect and that makes her relatable.
There's plenty of twists and turns in the plot and I was taken by surprise towards the end (which is odd for me and made the book even better.)
Fans of YA and Urban Fantasy need to read this book! I've put off YA for a long time because of the formula I often see in book descriptions, this is a breath of fresh air!

The story has some incredibly dark moments, so I’d recommend it for an audience of 16+ years of age, but it also has strong elements of hope despite the odds.
The characters are relatable and very engaging. As a reader, I didn’t always like Izara or Kain, but that actually made them more believable and intriguing.
The only thing I didn’t enjoy was the number of regular typos in the text, which I found annoying: they didn’t really detract from the story at all, but I am a stickler for those things, and I did find it distracting.
The book ended on a cliffhanger, so it wasn’t satisfying in the sense of getting answers or resolution, but it definitely whets the appetite for the next instalment!
I want more of Tompkin’s Academy!

Some of my favorite lines from the book:
"His pallid skin clung to his skull as if it were about to fall off..."
"I fell to my side as liquid bone slithered up my spine before hardening..."
