On which day was history's shortest war waged and won (in roughly 40 minutes)? How was Napoleon bested by a group of rabbits in 1807? Why did a dispute about beer in an Oxford pub lead to over 100 deaths and 470 years of penance? Why in 1752 did Britain go to bed on 2nd September and wake up on the 14th? How did a women's march in 1917 set off the Russian Revolution? On This Day in History brings to life a key event that happened on each day of the year. From the most important British battle that you've never heard of (20 May 685) to the first meeting of Lennon and McCartney (6 July 1957), and from why Julius Caesar should have been wary of the Ides of March (15 March 44BC) to the day Jeanne de Clisson became a pirate and single-handedly declared war on the King of France (2 August 1343), history is full of unlikely heroes and fascinating turning points. In this book Dan Snow shows us how each day offers a different and unexpected insight into our past. And story by gripping story, this year grows into a vivid, very human history of the world.

History at its most engaging
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 17 November 2018Verified Purchase
This is such a great idea. I turned immediately to my birthday. I can see everyone else doing that. Every day has a fascinating, short and often unexpected account of an event. Quite a lot are military and political but I was pleased to see that science, literature and engineering are well represented. This is not a book for those pursuing an academic career in history. But it is great for anyone who wants to have a daily dose of history!

Good for those who appreciate history in the world
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 5 August 2020Verified Purchase
I saw Dan Snow plug this on television once so purchased one for myself and gifted the other immediately as I thought it would be interesting.
I have to admit I have not read it from front to back, yet so unable to provide a true complete rating at this stage!
There is always the argument that you can look things up online however this book has a lot of information that you do not find at a glance.
There are no photographs immediately apparent, although there are maps at the start showing what happened in various parts of the world on particular days in history at a glance.
This book has January 1st to December 31st covered.
It will be a good book to read out to others, maybe at a gathering as it could be quite a social book for general knowledge, trivia and will encourage conversation.

Brilliant idea for a book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 15 February 2019Verified Purchase
Wonderful idea for a book for people who don’t like reading lots in one go/don’t have the time to read. You can read one page per day, perhaps on your commute or before bed. It’s easy to read & you get a lot of historical facts from one day. I’ve never really seen a book like this before. I bought it as a gift for my boyfriend for Valentine’s Day & he really appreciated the idea of it, making it easy to read as he’s usually out & about at work or at the gym. Beautifully detailed cover as well & hardback makes it feel expensive.

Love it

Bought this as a present for my boyfriend and he loves it. He is a real history geek but has dyslexia so struggles to read for a long period of time. This was perfect for him as every day is only a few paragraphs long. It is really interesting as well.
