Living the rustic life in a Sayulita barrio, a Mexican neighborhood, for six years was fun. But what happens when medical and dental care needs are not met in that small beach town? Time to reevaluate where to live and consider a move. Using the pros and cons list they compiled for the book “Retirement Before the Age of 59” (Healthy Living in Mexico #2) and recent experiences, they began considering a move to a bigger city with more to offer. Researching condominiums near the ocean led them to Puerto Vallarta.
Jon and Terry may have retired from RVing, but they still travel to interesting places in México. Follow them on their adventures and in everyday life as you read their stories about the last two years—more lessons learned during life in México.
Strong and healthy from years of working as a carpenter, Jake is now in denial about the new symptoms plaguing his body. Are these annoyances simply medication side effects, or a new condition? Should he tell Lindsay or fight this battle alone? Tremors, loss of sense of smell, pain, stiffness, and other changes in Jake’s muscular body bring fear for both Lindsay and Jake. Could this be Parkinson’s disease? Obtaining a definite diagnosis becomes a challenge, and then a shock.
Can Lindsay and Jake fight this disease and keep their vows—in sickness and in health, through the ordeals that might tear them apart? Is love enough to help them endure the challenges of this new illness?

So, what do Jon and Terry do all day? They live. They live, like they would anywhere, but life is slower, warmer, calmer, more peaceful, pleasurable, and much cheaper. They have time to explore the opportunities around them, new and fun activities to do, and new places to travel. Retirement in México is bliss, mostly. Every day includes a new adventure or entertaining event, usually some kind of exercise, sometimes a little work, and, of course, time for relaxing. Their retirement is anything but boring.
Issues of interest to expats and those thinking of moving to México such as health care and medical issues, how to receive mail, ways to get involved in the community, ease of travel within the country are addressed in this book, the fourth in the “Healthy Living in Mexico” series. Jon and Terry may have retired from full-time RVing, but they still travel in their motorhome to interesting places in México. Follow them on their adventures and everyday life as you read their stories about “Life in México”.

Then Jake was diagnosed with clinical depression, a major depressive disorder that stole the joy from his life. Later, periods of rage and mania changed his personality, testing his relationship with Lindsay. A phase of manic euphoria and frenzied spending forced Lindsay to take drastic measures.
Jake’s revised diagnosis of bipolar disorder, a manic-depressive illness, a radical brain disorder, caused the wonderful life he and Lindsay had built to begin to disintegrate. Would their wedding vows be enough to get them through this strain on their marriage? Could Lindsay tolerate the chaos caused by Jake’s severe mood swings, high energy and activity levels during periods of mania, replaced by months of sadness, anxiety, isolation, and despair when depression took over?
Would Lindsay be able to keep her vow “to have and to hold… in sickness and in health…”? Bipolar disorder and depression, mental illness issues, fell into the category of sickness, but no one told her it would be this difficult.
After years of psychiatrist visits, medication changes, counseling sessions, and other recommended therapy for Jake’s bipolar disorder, his moods still were not stabilized. Would newly discovered gene assays and blood tests indicate choices for a better treatment? Would escaping their stressful lifestyle and moving to México give Jake and Lindsay the new start their relationship needed?
Lindsay was determined to find the answer to balancing Jake’s brain chemistry so he would return to her as the split-apart she had fallen in love with. She hoped the chemistry of love would hold them together long enough to overcome this horrible disorder.

Lessons learned along the way, some shocking, came with their transition into expat life. The first two years included new adventures, some fun, others scary; unexpected experiences, some enlightening, others annoying; and new ways of getting things accomplished, some primitive, others simpler. Adapting to the quirks and eccentricities of life in Mexico didn’t happen overnight. It was an evolution, a realization that came slowly with each new lesson, that life south of the border is more different than they had anticipated, and not for everyone. Jon and Terry found that they were tough enough to adjust to this new life, with some advice from Americans and Canadians who had lived there longer, and with some help from their friendly Mexican neighbors.
Terry and Jon love the benefits that drew them to México, the sunny pleasant weather, the sandy beaches and warm ocean, lower cost of living, friendly people, a great variety of fresh, tasty food, many opportunities to exercise and relax outdoors, the culture and history, and the lively colorful holiday traditions. Plus, it’s close and easy to travel to from the U.S. But no one told them about all of the lessons they would have to learn. If you’ve already moved to México, you can probably relate to some of their culture shocks and adventures. If you’re planning to move south of the border, reading about their lessons before you move may help prepare you for the transition. It’s not a vacation—it’s better.

Making the decision to retire early was the easy part. Deciding where to retire took more travel in their motorhome and lots of thought. The process of selling and giving away their excess possessions so they could begin living a simplified, healthier life was a journey in itself.
Terry and Jon’s adventures while traveling in their motorhome are enough to entice one to go RV shopping immediately. Their decision to move to México may seem radical to some, but others may soon consider doing the same thing! The story of where they settled in México, and why, will make you wonder how soon you, too, will begin planning a similar escape from the chaos in the world to find your own piece of paradise in the sun.
