Product description
Review
Vasudhendra's Tejo Tungabhadra is a magnificent tale, straddling spheres of faith and fate, joy and suffering, love and loss. Translated in all its intensity by Maithreyi Karnoor, we discover that two distant worlds-separated by oceans, race, prejudice, and religion-ultimately reflect matching strands of human experience. Rich in texture, with compelling characters, Tejo Tungabhadra is a masterful contribution to Indian historical fiction. -- Manu S. Pillai
Tejo Tunghabadra is a gripping story, wonderfully told. Vasudhendra combines beautifully realized characters with lovingly detailed history and geography to tell a story that is moving, intelligent and deeply satisfying. I couldn't put it down. -- Parvati Sharma, author of The Story of Babur

An enthusiastic hiker, Vasudhendra has scaled Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro and several peaks of the Himalayas, and he has hiked around the Kailash Manasarovar. He enjoys playing squash, reading classics like the Mahabharata and listening to Indian classical music. He took an oath not to watch TV in 2000 as it was coming in the way of his keen studies; he has kept his pledge, so far!

I have not read the original but felt the translated prose to be very smooth flowing and natural.
Although be forewarned that it comes with quite a bit of gore and cruelty, but I suppose those are the vices of the middle ages.

🌅 The book is written in a poetic yet have a very significant writing style. The various events that happened simultaneously are portrayed very well with respect to the timelines. It shows the effect of social issues and events on the lifestyle of the people from history.
📌 It's a perfectly blended historical fiction with an essence of poetry. It tries to describe and present the real time scenarios of the 15th-16th century, also the aspects and effects of certain historical events throughout the world in the respective Kingdoms and empires.

Tejo Tungabhadra is Vasudhendra’s masterpiece that is richly laden with elements that intrigue and amaze. Spanning across continents, kingdoms, culture and ambition this tale is a volatile journey for those who are trapped through events of fate and choicest decisions.
Set across the 15th and 16th century this book highlights the lives of it’s four leads Bella, Gabriel, Keshava and Hampamma sans letting the supporting elements and characters seeming meager. Weaving an expansive story with specific attention to detail history without seeming eager essentially let’s the plot flow.
Without letting out the story I’d simply like to appreciate the beauty of writing about society that aims to thrive through its ambitious citizens, their hardships but conveniently binds them within barriers of religion and nationality. Changes that are unconventional but accepting and accommodating create unrest, nurturing a suffering by the system to it’s common folk. This magnificent tale takes the reader back and forth through time and places to relive history in all its vividness.
Expansive, encyclopaedic and satisfying.
Verdict: Must read!
