First off - what's good :
1.) Construction quality is decent. ABS plastic is used. Drip Tray is made of high quality metal. Sturdy and compact build.
2.) Quality of portafilter, portafilter basket, handle, the fit of the portafilter are all very good. No complaints at all.
3.) Scoop and Tamper are of plastic, but very high quality - and more than enough for most people. If you are a pro, then you should get a non pressurised portafilter and tamper that they sell separately.
4.) Assembly isn't a problem. You just set it up and plug it in and it works.
5.) Since it is thermoblock based, you get very precise water temperature, so that way - the quality of the espresso shot is AMAZING! Trust me it is AMAZING. For a moderate coffee addict like me, i was surprised that i could pull such a shot at my very first attempt! I used Blue Tokai, and it was fabulous.
6.) One of the ONLY COMPANIES at this price point that promise ATLEAST 15 BAR OF PRESSURE from their pump, that they say are sourced from the world's experts in espresso pumps. I have no reason to doubt them, as this company has a very detailed set of videos on YouTube explaining their product - Check them out. They even have a video of their facility in Lower Parel, Mumbai, and show case their employees as well.
7.) Thermoblock ensures FAST heat up of water, but doesn't make it boiling hot. It precisely makes it about 90 degrees C - to ensure ideal shot extraction. A boiler as is found on most other machines at this price point won't have that precision, and may use overheated water to brew.
Now for the areas of improvement or things to note while buying :
1.) Since this is a thermoblock based machine, it is always advised to run the machine with no coffee in the portafilter both BEFORE and AFTER pulling a shot. This means that you won't be able to churn out more than 2 espresso shots without noticing a slight dip in the quality of the crema, the taste of the shot also slightly may be different. Nothing MAJOR but hey - only enthusiasts and afficionados will look to buy an espresso machine, so be warned. YOU WILL HAVE TO DO A RINSE CYCLE (run machine without coffee) everytime for BEST RESULTS. This is even written in the manual.
2.) You will have to purge the steamer of some hot water before you get the steam you desire. This means you'll have to run it in a spare vessel for about 10-12 seconds to get the level of steam performance needed. Even this is standard procedure as listed in manual for best results. This means those seeking to have this in very small startup coffee shops will have too much work in their hands to deal with the volumes they churn out.
3.) There is no TIMER for the shot : I believe this is the most glaring set back. If there was a shot timer - i wouldn't need to do a guesswork on when to stop the extraction. This will be bad for first-timers, since you will only have to extract 30 ml for single shot espresso, and 60 ml for double shot. Better have a cup of the measurements mentioned - so as not to overextract and ruin your espresso. If they incorporate a timer, then this will be the BEST machine out there below 20k.
4.) The pour area will not fit big coffee mugs. You will have to remove the drip tray cover and even then, it'll be a snug fit. The machine is compact and not much space for mugs.
5.) No mug warmer - can't complain at such a fantastic price, of course. Your rinse cycle can take care of this, as the hot water rinsed, will warm up your cup before you pull a shot.
Of course - inspite of all the above - I really LOVE the espressos that this machine puts out. It is really fantastic, the crema on espresso is something i've rarely seen in our local shops, and the smells permeate the room for hours!! Like a pro coffee shop. The company is a passionate little company out of Mumbai, the owner seems like a very dedicated passionate guy, so stop thinking too much about the value - JUST GET IT.
This is FANTASTIC VALUE FOR MONEY for the Indian market. No need to look at italian machines for the masses who crave authentic quality coffee.
Freebies are excellent saved me almost 1000rs.Coffee powder provided is 100℅ Arabica so thumbs up for that.
My main purpose for buying the machine was Latte Art. I have been trying daily, very difficult, not impossible and please machine should not be blamed for this it depends on the skill of the person I have seen a shop having machine of 60000rs still they agree not able to steam milk for latte art. Lately I am able to make imperfect heart. One thing I am not able to get that Whirlpool effect essential for steaming milk for Latte Art, might be my fault.
One thing which I have seen is baked milk on steam wand which is very hard to remove, I tried cleaning just after steaming my milk but then also little bit of baked milk stays there.
Drip tray could have been better because those 2 holes are not just below the portafilter, you'll see.
Crema in espresso is good.
Machine does get hot they could have installed a cup warmer but as it is home espresso machine the machine would not be always kept ON like the commerical ones so it does not matter.
Tecnora's packaging was very good.
Lastly, all little things can be ignored for the price it is being offered. Tecnora deserves a 5 star for its effort you can see it's older machine reviews, best in India.
I'll update my review if I am able to get better Latte Art like Rosetta.
I'll give Amazon 1 star for its pathetic shipping time.
If the temperature is less than the optimal temperature, it will taste sour, and if you over heat, then it will taste bitter. you have to keep all these things in mind to get a proper espresso shot.
And if you are going to make latte(1/3 espresso+ 2/3 steamed milk) or Cappuccino(1/3 espresso+ 1/3 steamed milk+ 1/3 foamed milk) or machiato( same as Cappuccino but stronger dose) then you have to froth milk.
There are two steps.
1. Stretching( this is part where you generate a fine micro foam on the surface of your milk)
2. Streaming and roll ( you roll the milk to the right temperature nearly 68 degree centigrade)
You'll observe a increase in volume (20%)
With no big bubble.
Note: use chilled milk because after 37 degree centigrade you can't give texture to milk.
PS: it's really difficult to give fine micro foam! Haven't mastered it yet :p
Watch Youtube videos for frothing milk.
Sweetness: when heat the milk (by frothing ) you activate lactose hence it tastes sweet.
Hence proper frothing is very essential for a good cup of latte or machiato or Cappuccino.
So you have to keep all these things in mind.
Coffee: there are two varieties
1. Arabica (0.8 to 1.4%caffeine) 80% grown world wide
2. Robusta (1.4 to 4% caffeine) 20% grown world wide
Arabica will give you a smooth flavour but robusta gives you a stronger hit)
The are different kinds of roast for coffee beans.
Light (mild), medium (less intense) , dark ( strong flavor)
Grind: you have to use fine grind for this machine like a texture of grinned sugar.
(The seller provides good coffee)
Now Few points you would like to know about this state of the art Machine.
1. It brews coffee in the right temperature (80 degree centigrade) and produces stream (94-98) in a different temperature. With 15 bar pressure! You need that amount of pressure to change the texture of milk.
For maintaining the temperature they have a thermoblock!
2. They have an Italian pump for full flavor extraction.
3. The build is premium
4. Ultimate customer support.
5. Gives almost everything that you need with the machine ( I'm little sad that they don't give a metal tamper with this) you can buy additionally but that will cost you extra.
Few important things!
The power switch as shown in the videos (uploaded by the seller with that beautiful dumb lady ;) ) is not a normal switch. They have upgraded the product with a spring loaded switch which has an auto shut off mechanism.
So when you switch it on press once it will come back to off position but now the power is on, and to switch it off you have to again press it and hold for two seconds and then release the switch .
This is an espresso machine so it dispenses one or two shots at a go. So you don't need an carafe!
The height between the drip tray cover and portafiler nozzle (from where hot coffee comes out) is very less! That's not a fault in the machine.
As i have mentioned before this is an espresso machine. You need proper Cappuccino/ latte/ machiato cups which are short but very broad.
The brewing part the machine does everything. You just have to tamp the coffee harder ( till it's in-compressible) and mark the time of extracting. (25-30 seconds) that's the time hot water, at the right temp (80 degree ) interacts with coffee and give you a nice thick crema!
Abe ohh yes don't forget to purge your steam wand before and after every time you froth milk and clean mineral deposits once in a month.
Watch videos that the seller has posted.
So guys that's all i have learnt. If i get to know something else I'll jot it down over here.
Now coming to amazon shipment: I had to return this product twice (due to few issues)
For the inconvenience caused, they let me keep the two coffee packets that came with the two machines that i returned.
Win win situation. :)
I have made a Coffee Station in My Room (DIY), I'll show you that. and a picture of the first espresso shot I made.
