About the author

Swami Satyananda was born in Almora (Uttaranchal) in 1923. Drawn to spiritual life from an early age, he left home at the age of eighteen, and in 1943 surrendered himself to Swami Sivananda in Rishikesh who initiated him into Dashnami sannyasa in 1947. He served his guru for twelve years, perfecting every aspect of spiritual life. Thereafter, he travelled through out the Indian subcontinent as a wandering ascetic.
Realizing the need of the times as scientific rendition of the ancient system of yoga, he founded the International Yoga Fellowship in 1956 and the Bihar School of Yoga in 1963. During the next twenty years, Swami Satyananda hoisted the flag of yoga in every corner of the world, consolidated BSY into a foremost institution of yoga, and authored over eighty major texts on yoga, tantra and spiritual life.
‘Satyananda Yoga’ became a tradition which combines classical knowledge with experiential understanding and a modern outlook. In 1984 he founded the Yoga Research Foundation to synchronize scientific research and yoga, and Sivananda Math to assist the underprivileged. In 1988, at the peak of his achievements, he renounced everything and adopted kshetra sannyasa, living as a paramahamsa ascetic. In 1989 Rikhia was revealed to him, where he came to live and performed higher vedic sadhanas in seclusion. Receiving the command to provide for his neighbours in 1991, he allowed the ashram to help the underprivileged villages in the region. From 1995 onwards, he performed a twelveyear Rajasooya Yajna with the sankalpa of peace, plenty and prosperity for all, and in 2007 he announced the establishment of Rikhiapeeth with its mandate to ‘serve, love, give’.
Swami Satyananda attained mahasamadhi, a yogic accomplishment of discarding the body at will to become one with the universal consciousness, in 2009, in the presence of his disciples.

1. The font is very small and print quality not good either
2. Only one picture shown for each yoga position. There should be at least few pictures to show, initial, mid stage and final position for each pose. User has to read the instruction and visualize to get to the final position. I have decent background in yoga, otherwise, I would have struggled to understand the positions.
If it is any other book, I would have given 1 star for the reason above. The content is too good. It is covering various aspects of yoga, breathing, meditation, Mudras, Chakra, cleansing your body, food etc. The book can be treated as "way of life". The book is divided into three books
1. Prepration
2. Advanced practices
3. Kriya Yoga
Suppose when the publisher decided to increase the font size, then the book can be as big as 2000 odd pages. What you are getting is effectively three book in one. I guess, you can treat the book as Yoga bible

But even if I were not, I'm sure I would find this an amazing book.
This book contains everything anyone could ever need for the practice of yoga. It may not have absolute details of every posture (you need "APMB" - Asana, Pranayama, Mudra, Bandha - for that), but this book describes practices from the full range of yoga.
But better than that, it is also a step-by-step guide starting from absolute beginner, right through to some very deep practices. it is a book of personal transformation. Don't expect it to teach you to be a gymnast, expect it to convert you from your present state, to someone who is more calm, integrated and capable of dealing with life.
If you follow the 36 graduated lessons over the intended 3 years or more, you will be challenged on every level of your being, but you will also have the opportunity to find the true heart of Yoga.
I would strongly recommend anyone attempting to follow this book should have a yoga teacher, and even though the book starts from an assumption you are an absolute beginner, it is probably best, though perhaps not essential, to have a couple of years experience.
Get the book, get into the habit of devoting 15 minutes to an hour a day to sincere practice, and use this book to transform your life.

The book was being sold at over 50 pounds, but I managed to buy it for a little over 20 from an independent seller.
The book gives the reader an understanding of all the aspects of yoga, such as purifying your karma in day to day living; working with your breath; devoitional practice; hand gestures; yoga postures; meditational practices and detoxification and purification practices. The subjects combine in monthly lessons, so that your practice develops from begginner to master in a comprehensive way.
I have been studying from the book for about three months now, and this is what I have found...
I experiences some degree of aversion to some of the practices, such as Jala Neti - which involved pouring salt water in one nostril and letting it trickle out of the other; or Kunjal Krya, which involves drinking sal water to bursting point before vomiting it out. I have had a nosy at later lessons, that seem to suggest swallowing a rag to clean the slomach and gullet. I personally think that some of these practices are a little dated, and perhaps unnecessary for the average aspirant - especially in a world where less invasive alternatives have been made available by modern science - and can be dropped from one's practice without any real loss. Haiving said that, I have incorporated Jala Neti into my daily routines; not only do I find it straight forward and easy, but I have noticed that my sense of smell greatly improves and I feel much clearer headed and at one with my body and it's surroundings: there is a lot to learn from these ancients!
Another aspect that has developed my understanding and practice of yoga is the practice of Pranayama - which is controlling the energy of the body through breath control. My breathing is deeper, more relaxed and I feel I am really taking more pleasure and nutrition from the air. Not only this, but my posture is improving to accomodate the increased lung capacity. I am also sleeping much beter at night.
The only downside to this book, in my opinion, is the crudeness of some of the drawings. The descriptions usually suffice, but there have been a couple of poses that I have been unsure about. I have found clips on YOUTUBE that have helped me to see others do these poses, however. I must emphasis that, on the whole, the book is very well written; modern science and ancient philosophy is brought together to make for a fascinating read.
I look forward to reading the later lessons on diet, vegetarianism and the chakras. This book is simply a goldmine of information!
A brilliant and attractive book, on offer at reasonable prices!
NAMASTE! :)
