About the Author
Rupi Kaur is a poet, artist, and performer. Her works have taken the literary world by storm. Her second book, the sun and her flowers—an instant global bestseller, is an artistic sibling to her debut, milk and honey—one of America's bestselling books of 2017.
“i am the product of all the ancestors getting together and deciding these stories need to be told.”
Rupi sees her work as an articulation of this vision. She’s an eternal artist. At the age of five, her mother handed her a paintbrush and said, “draw your heart out.” At seventeen, she happened upon a local open mic night where she performed her first spoken word poem. She fell in love with performance poetry that night. Rupi continued performing across Canada, while building a community of readers and poetry enthusiasts. While studying at the University of Waterloo, Rupi wrote, illustrated, and self-published her first collection, milk and honey. In the years since, milk and honey has become an international phenomenon. It’s sold over 3 million copies, been translated into more than 35 languages, and landed as a #1 New York Times bestseller—where it has spent more than 100 consecutive weeks.
“i am the first woman in my lineage with freedom of choice. to craft her future whichever way i choose. say what is on my mind when i want to. without the whip of the lash. there are hundreds of firsts i am thankful for.”
Rupi explores a variety of themes in her work ranging from love, loss, trauma, healing, femininity, migration, and revolution. She’s a storyteller and chronicler—a repository of community and history. There’s a simplicity and nuance to her work that has found a home in the hearts of millions. This magic is captured in her stage performances, which are magnetic musical interactions of poetry, art, and theater. Rupi's long-awaited second collection, the sun and her flowers, was published in 2017 and debuted as a #1 global bestseller. Within the first three months it sold a million copies and was embraced by readers worldwide. She’s a Forbes 30 under 30, an editor of the 2016 Mays Literary Anthology of New Writing from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and one of BBC’s 100 Women. Rupi hopes to continue her artistic exploration through art and poetry—searching for ways to understand and articulate.

This is my first Poetry book I have read, after my schooling.so I was a bit apprehensive about reading poetry that has me reaching for a dictionary and where the teacher used to break down sentences while you were in a school. Luckily that wasn’t the case here as her poems are so simple that it leaves an indelible impression on your soul.
“trust your body
it reacts to right and wrong
better than your mind does”-Rupi Kaur
“I do not need the kind of love
That is draining
I want someone
Who energises me “ – Rupi Kaur
I read this book in Jan,but I couldn’t bring myself to write a review as I was speechless as to how some one can convey so much in a mere sentences still trumps me. No wonder Ms kaur has Million followers on Instagram Account.
This amazing book of poems takes the reader through 5 different stages people go through before they bloom into their highest version of themselves, such as Wilting, falling,to take root, rise and blooming ..just like flowers…there are others poems about the one,the right kind of love and what love looks like etc that will leave you dumbstruck and in awe of Rupi Kaur.
The layout of the book is simple and her own illustrations add more depth to her poems. Advice to my fellow readers:please buy print version bcz you need to catch your breath after being hit by such profound words….and reading print book gives you time to reflect and let those words sink into your pyche and let your mind wander and wonder. Poetry was the only genre missing in my reading list & thanks to Rupi I seem to have fallen in love with poetry and hopefully this will effect my reading choices in future too.
This was the first book I read in 2018 and it was such a beautiful way to start new year I guess.
Do read this book of poems that will touch your soul and also heal and nourish a part of your soul that only beautiful poetry can fill.
Read it ,it will heal your wounds.
Amazon: keep up the good work guys I got my copy on the next day itself…(prime benefits)
and it makes no difference
yet I hear one insult
and all confidence shatters"
In the midst of reading this book I was in tears. I hate to accept how true she is, the way she portrays our society. Her writing is so simple yet provoking. It will alert your senses for sure.
I loved the book...Some poems are so good that my eyes swarmed with tears.. ❤ illustrations only add to the beauty and depth of the book.. book is very efficiently divided into chapters.. it is like that first you remember your wounds and then you remember that you have/can/will heal. Highly recommend it.
I have attached two pictures of the book in my review
