When you first start the game, it will ask you to take your picture using the PS3's camera. In order to get a good, clear picture (as shown on the box's cover) you'd need to have a spot light on you and be only inches from the camera. Also, when playing each game, it appears that you need to make over exaggerated gestures with the motion controller in order for the camera to track your movements. This is difficult for a young child. We don't have this issue with any other games we play.
This game is good for some family fun, but if you're looking for a really fun kids' game, I'd suggest PS3's Carnival Island. Please read my review on that game.
The game is kinda fun if you play on your own, but you probably wouldn't play it for more than 10 mins. With a group of people, though, it's a completely different experience. Trying to outcompete your friends adds a lot more purpose and excitement to the game. The best thing is that it appeals almost equally to all ages and sexes - both boys and girls were playing, ages 6 through 13 - I can imagine few activities where these kids would all be involved together. (The adults looked on with great interest too, but the kids were having too much fun and we let them play). And you can actually set the difficulty level for each player separately, so you can even out the chances of winning pretty well. The game also has a nice mix of games and modes of play, so that you can play for a couple of hours and you don't get bogged down. It's very fast-paced and exciting.
Actually, after all of the holiday parties we decided to play as a family. We played 3 games (something like 20 rounds) over an hour-plus and had a blast. With the difficulty levels appropriately set, each game was very competitive and each one of us ended up winning one game. My wife and I both ended up playing so hard that our arms hurt the next day. :)
To sum up, this is not a game a lot of people would play by themselves. However, if you are having a party, this is the game to have. I cannot imagine a better game for such a setting - no prior skills required! Well worth the money.
I have also realized that this is going to be a lot of fun when I have a bunch of "motion impaired" adults hanging around the house. A lot of the games are simple enough for kids but have a goofy humor to them, such as the minigame where you fly a helicopter to try to rescue cityfolk before they are devoured by Godzilla.
All-in-all, it's a nice package of fun, silly, simple games.
The controls are pretty responsive, but it was not overly easy to master the controls and play the games successfully. If I play on 'normal' mode and a child plays on 'easy' mode... the child has a very good chance of beating me. I haven't gotten good enough to consider the 'hard' mode yet.
It's basically a collection of mini-games that use the PS move.
I guess the downside is that the multiplayer requires taking turns, no simultaneous playing, but I think the player kinda needs all the space available for moving around anyway, so I don't find it an issue.
