Ratings- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(✨💫💫)/5 (4.7/5)
Penned down by the famous author of The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho, The Spy is the story of the famous Margaretha Zelle popularly known as Mata Hari. Her lifestyle, her friend circle everything came to scrutiny during the First world war, where France labelled her as A Spy and a double agent for both France & Germany. Was she really a spy? or just a free thinking independent woman who was made a scapegoat during the most dreaded war? (Read the book to find out)
●The author divide the book in 3 parts. The first 2 parts were in Mata Hari's own voice through her letters to her lawyer Mr. Clunet & the 3rd was in Mr. Clunet's own letters written for Mata Hari, a tricky concept which worked for this book.
●The story portrays brilliantly all the stages of Mata Hari's entire life from her childhood days in Holland to her first days in France when she was at the height of her succes and then also her last days when her name was demolished publicly.
● It captures her love towards France, the very country which denied her very innocence, her so-called friends who deserted her in her need.
●The conception of love that Mata Hari coveted was so different yet honest but ultimately she couldn't understand the love of Mr. Clunet whom she accused of fighting her case half heartedly was heartbreaking.
◆The only one I could find was the story felt rushed sometimes, there were some gaps which if filled would have resulted in something as a perfect creation.
I would urge every to read this book. The story is not just Mata Hari's but all the strong willed women feared by a society which is dominated by men.
This book is equally captivating as any other book by Paulo Coelho and I’m a huge fan of his works, and I must say he did not let down my expectations. And I would recommend this book to any Paulo Coelho fan to go and read this.
But if you want to start reading Paulo Coelho this book might not be suitable. And because of the presence of few mature contents, I would suggest this book to the readers above the age of 17-18years old.
The spy is one of such Novel , It is based on the story of Margaretha Geertruida better known by the stage name Mata Hari and The whole story is told in Her voice through her final letters , She arrived in Paris she was penniless. Within a months she was the most celebrated women in the city.
During 1917 when the whole country was consumed in Paranoia, Mata Hari's lifestyle brought her under suspicion, She was arrested and charged of espionage and finally executed by firing squad in the France.
The spy is the unforgettable story of woman who dared to defy convention and paid the ultimate price.
Punished for being a spy Matahari was no normal woman. Her life and death brought out the faces of the society hungry for glitter, power and deceit.
