Description for Spigen SGP10204 Slim Armor Case for Samsung Galaxy S4/i9500 - Retail Packaging -
The Slim Armor case for the Galaxy S4 is specifically designed to protect the device at all angles. The TPU case features improved shock absorption on the top, bottom, and corners to effectively protect the Galaxy S4 from external impact. Slim Armor is double layered with a TPU case and a polycarbonate hard case to provide additional protection in a form-fitted design. The polycarbonate midsection has a glossy finish and can be removed from the TPU. This allows the Slim Armor to be interchanged with different colors. The case fits precisely onto the Galaxy S4 for a natural and sleek look, and the speaker opening is specifically designed to fully utilize the speaker without reducing sound quality. The polycarbonate midsection has a glossy UV coating to prevent the colors from fading or rubbing off. Slim Armor is designed to highlight the shape and style of the Galaxy S4.

I will admit, I'm concerned about the case's ability to absorb a drop, but hopefully I won't end up testing it. It's VERY sleek. Maybe their design is superior enough that the extra rubber isn't necessary, but I find that hard to believe. The Commuter's thick lip around the edge of the screen may have been ugly, but it saved my screen at least once in the time I've owned my S4. Maybe I'm just being cynical.
That brings us to the reason I knocked a star off this bad boy: it's a very nice looking case, and the glossy back is kinda cool. However, it's also slick, and I can see myself dropping it by trying to pull the phone out of my pocket by pinching it up at the sides. That was never a problem with the Commuter, but this one is slick. I've done well the first day, but I'm also being very conscious of the fact that it's slick.
I guess time will be the test. I'll update this review periodically based on my experience.
EDIT (10/15/2014): So far, so good. The case hasn't been an issue. I've even dropped it once, although from only a few feet above the floor, and the phone was fine. I actually feel like I've got a whole new phone because the case is so much more sleek than the Commuter was.
This case has rubberized material that protects the phone (and edge! and buttons!) all the way around. The other case was thinner and therefore fit more easily in a neoprene exercise arm band carrier for the Galaxy S4, but it exposed top and bottom edges to wear and tear. And my phone is showing some cosmetic wear and tear in precisely those unprotected locations. This "armor" case is a little thicker and since it completely surrounds the phone on all edges, it will protect those edges far better. The new case also has button covers, which should make the phone less sensitive to damage from wet hands.
So, despite the increased thickness and the negatives that come with that, I think this case is better for my needs. The only remaining negative for me is that the very thin rubber edge is slightly difficult to get over all the edges of the phone. This makes getting the phone in and out of this case less easy, and therefore less likely.
As others have noted the left side of the case doesn't completely cover the silver/chrome around the screen of the S4. Some might say that's not a big deal, but I do work outside mostly, even in the winter, and that shiny silver/chrome piece causes major glare when the sun hits it.
Next and this may have just been the product image being odd, but the Dodger Blue looks to be two colors, it's not, it's the right side shade of blue all over. I really thought I would rather have the Dodger Blue color all over, but it would have looked better if it was the two-tone from the picture. Admittedly, this part of my purchase was completely superficial since I was born in California and love the Dodgers, but live on the East Coast now. However, as superficial as it seems, the whole purpose of me having two phone cases is to have one I like the look of compared to the other case being more sturdy for work.
The next problem is that the back plate of the case is a major fingerprint magnet in the Dodger Blue. I had the case on my phone for less than 30 minutes when I noticed the back was completely smudged from fingerprints. They do wipe off easily with a microfiber cloth or your shirt even, but the fingerprint problem looked to be part of a much worse problem -- the back of this case is glossy and slick. My previous Spigen for the iPhone was a gunmetal color that was matte. This glossiness and slickness was the last reason I'll be returning this case. Even as my "not while working" case, it's still way too slick.
The good points are: The holes all seem to be lined up well which makes me think the left silver/chrome piece around my screen isn't a defect, as the holes would be off if the case wasn't cut to match the holes. All the buttons worked properly and one thing I prefer on this case over my Otterbox case is it has a charger opening instead of a rubber piece covering the charger opening like the Otterbox has. It's a minimal point, but I've never had any problems with damaging the charger port on a phone so the open charger port was one thing I did like about this Spigen case. Beyond that though, there just wasn't that much that impressed me. Hopefully Spigen will keep making these are return to a more matte finish on their cases or even add something of a rubber coating on the back to offset the glossiness.
