I recently decided to try soutache - was completely ignorant of the techniques required. This book does a great job of presenting the material in order from beginner to intermediate. A complete list and explanation of supplies including, in some cases, brand examples. The projects begin with easier ones ending with more complex projects and, if done in that order, the lessons from one are used in the next project along with a few new techniques thereby building on each other. But the highlight of this book is the use of step by step photos. Every project has clear, high quality, close up shots of each and every step. I have never before seen such carefully executed depictions of steps involved in a project. For instance, the first project (Princess Earrings) has 18 photos each thoroughly explained. The cover necklace (Beaded Lariat) has 33 photos.
This book will meet the needs of those who prefer to learn via pictures or those who prefer to read directions - both are done with great care and thoroughness. The author's style of writing is comfortable; like being taught by a friend. There's whimsy and humor dotting the information making it easy to follow and understand.
Ms. Sweet-McNamera's impressive book educates and inspires. What more could one ask for?
I just opened my magic Amazon package tonight and read the book in one sitting. If you have any desire at all, or even curiosity about, this art form, you could find no better resource than this book. It starts out with simple projects to get you started and then builds into more complex pieces. While the projects are great, this book seems to be written toward using the instructions as a launching point to making and designing pieces of your own. I am off to check out soutache vendors and pilfering through my stack of cabs and beads to put something together.
The instructions and layout are very clear, and the nice large photos help you easily follow along with each step.
I am still planning on taking an in-person class next month to help me get started with soutache since I personally learn better in a hands-on class, but this book will be a great resource. If you are someone who can learn a new skill from a book, though, this one will be great.
"Soutache & Bead Embroidery" adds another dimension to jewelry design and is especially good for those who don't do wire wrapping but want to make a beautiful bezel to showcase a beautiful stone. This bead embroidery technique is really good for someone who does hand sewing and beadwork but doesn't have the time to invest in learning to wire wrap a cabochon or special stone, plus it adds color and drama to accent and enhance your beads.
If you already do wirework, bead stringing or beadwork, but want to take your jewelry to another level, I recommend this technique and this book because it opens another door to beautiful jewelry design. And even if you don't do any beadwork at all but love to look at beautiful jewelry design, this is a great "coffee table book". The step-by-step photos for each project are spectacular and the gallery of designs is really great eye candy!
OK Amee, hope you've started on your next volume!
Additionally securing the beginning and ending soutache is so important, and I felt the book was lacking in ways to keep bulk and glue under control which is essential for keeping this trim from unraveling, showing on the face of the work, and leaving a lumpy surface. I would have appreciated far more photos and information concerning the back of the work.
I feel the author did not intentionally leave out any pertinent information, and perhaps others are better learners from her written methods than I, but I found the information a bit incomplete.
